Every January, the Television Crossover Hall of Fame kicks off another year of inductions into the Hall with a classic TV character.  This year is no different, but I never would have guessed this entry would be so sad.  And so soon.

DENNIS MITCHELL

Jay North, who starred as the young mischief maker with the characteristic blond cowlick on the 1959-63 CBS comedy 'Dennis the Menace', has died. He was 73.

On Sunday, 04/07/2025, Jay North died at his home in Lake Butler, Florida, after years of battling colon cancer, according to Jeannie Russell, who played Margaret Wade on his show, told The Hollywood Reporter. She called him her “otherworldly brother.”

The live-action adaptation of the Hank Ketcham comic strip of the same name. Dennis Mitchell was a loveable young boy, dressed in overalls and carrying a slingshot in his pocket. Everywhere he went, Dennis' wide-eyed curiosity, well-meaning attempts to help out, and his simply being a normal, red-blooded American boy growing up always seemed to lead to trouble. Usually on the receiving end was Dennis' next-door neighbor, retired business machine salesman George Wilson.

Dennis worshiped Mr. Wilson, but he usually displayed a less-than-cordial attitude around the young lad. Mr. Wilson's wife, Martha, adored Dennis and saw him as a surrogate grandson (since the Wilsons never had any children). Dennis' long-suffering parents were Henry (an engineer) and Alice (a stay-at-home mother).

Episodes revolved around Dennis' adventures and the trouble that usually followed. Also involved in the fun were Dennis' friends Tommy, Margaret, and Seymour. During the final year of the show, Mr. Wilson's brother, John, moved in after George and Martha left the neighborhood (due to the death of Joseph Kearns). The live-action "Dennis the Menace" ran for years in syndication; an animated series showed up in the 1980s.—Brian Rathjen

Donna has her kitchen remodeled and new appliances installed.

While crossover appearances are not uncommon in television shows (it is an easy way to promote a second show), this particular instance was unusual. Even though the two shows were produced by the same studio (Columbia), they were broadcast by different networks. Donna's show was on ABC while Dennis' show was on CBS.

Jay North and Joseph Kearns reprise their roles from the CBS series "Dennis the Menace" in this episode, which aired on ABC. This marks one of the earliest times in TV history that two scripted series on different networks cooperated on a multi-network crossover, not counting variety shows.

North plays Dennis in this episode.  Two seasons later, he returns, playing himself.  So Freddie is one of those rare TV characters to meet both the actor and the character he played.)

I can only vouch for the Skippy and Rice Krispies commercials that North appeared as Dennis.  Both can be found online.

Because he also appeared in the commercial for Skippy, George Wilson (as played by Joseph Kearns) will one day be inducted into the TVXOHOF as well.  (That's Gale Gordon as George's brother John in the Rice Krispies picture above.)

WHO BLIPVERTS - THE MEDDLING MONK STRIKES AGAIN!

Commercials are a great source for inspiration when thinking about fanficcish stories about the Meddling Monk.  I’ve written before about those commercials which are set in Earth’s Past but which have samples of today’s products – FedEx, Pepsi, Bud Light, etc.

Amazon Prime debuted one of these in January, in which a listless Napoleon Bonaparte retreated to his tent to watch the Prime Video specials which starred comedians doing their stand-up routines.  Inspired, Bonaparte puts his own comedy act together and tries it out on his soldiers.  (He was very deadpan, something like a Napoleonic Steven Wright.)

Not only was the Amazon service and Amazon Prime available in the early years of the 19th Century, but Nappie had a high-def wide-screen TV to watch the specials.

O’Bviously, this was due to the interference of the Monk, a Time Lord who wanted to disrupt the Earth’s timeline so that its history would be better aligned with his vision of the Future.

Since we know by watching any TV show set in the main Toobworld that it never played out that way, then the Doctor must have stepped in to foil his machinations once again.

July has always been something of an amorphous month when it came to inducting candidates into the Television Crossover Hall of Fame.  Mostly it has been the showcase for detectives, but it’s also been something of a catch-can.  This year, it’s a little of both….

KITT or K.I.T.T. is the short name of two fictional characters from the adventure franchise 'Knight Rider'. While having the same acronym, the KITTs are two different entities: one known as the Knight Industries Two Thousand, which appeared in the original TV series 'Knight Rider', and the other as the Knight Industries Three Thousand, which appeared first in the two-hour 2008 pilot film for a new 'Knight Rider' TV series and then the new series itself. In both instances, KITT is an artificially intelligent electronic computer module in the body of a highly advanced, very mobile, robotic automobile: the original KITT as a 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, and the second KITT as a 2008–2009 Ford Shelby GT500KR.

During filming, KITT was voiced by a script assistant, with voice actors recording KITT's dialog later. David Hasselhoff and original series voice actor William Daniels first met each other six months after the series began filming. KITT's evil twin is KARR, whose name is an acronym of Knight Automated Roving Robot. KARR was voiced first by Peter Cullen and later by Paul Frees in seasons one and three, respectively, of the NBC original TV series 'Knight Rider'. A 1991 sequel film, "Knight Rider 2000", is centered on KITT's original microprocessor unit transferred into the body of the vehicle intended to be his successor, the Knight Industries Four Thousand (Knight 4000), voiced by Carmen Argenziano and William Daniels. Val Kilmer voiced KITT in the 2008–2009 'Knight Rider' series.

In the original series' history, K.I.T.T. was conceived and designed by the late Wilton Knight, a brilliant but eccentric billionaire and the founder of the "Foundation for Law and Government", (commonly shortened to "FLAG") and its parent Knight Industries.

K.I.T.T.'s main cybernetic processor was first installed in a mainframe computer used by the United States government in Washington D.C. However, Wilton saw better use for "him" in the Foundation's crime-fighting crusade and eventually the system was installed in the vehicle. K.I.T.T. was in fact the second vehicle built by Knight Industries with an artificial intelligence. His predecessor was K.A.R.R., the Knight Automated Roving Robot. K.A.R.R. was programmed for self-preservation, but this proved to be dangerous to the Foundation's interests. K.A.R.R. was later deactivated and placed in storage while K.I.T.T. was given to his new operator Michael Knight (the new identity of Michael Long).

Unlike K.A.R.R., K.I.T.T. is programmed primarily to protect Michael and all human life at all costs. This is made clear in the pilot episode when Michael asks Devon Miles if K.I.T.T. will protect anyone driving it. Devon's answer is that K.I.T.T.'s primary function is the preservation of human life, and Michael's in particular.

O’Bservation:
The TVXOHOF is only inducting the Knight Industries Two Thousand and not the upgrades or KARR.  But as the shows and TV movies are all connected, I will include the six degrees of separation for the crossovers.

K.I.T.T. not only exists in Toobworld, but also in the tele-version show based on the “real” car.  So, there are two K.I.T.T.s to be inducted.  There is the “real” AI car which we see in the TV series, which means the one to be found in the main Toobworld.  And then there is the fake K.I.T.T. who stars in the TV series as it is seen in Toobworld.

KITT has a front- scanner bar called the Anamorphic Equalizer. The device is a fibre-optic array of electronic eyes. The scanner can see in all visual wavelengths, as well as X-ray and infrared. Its infrared Tracking Scope can monitor the position of specific vehicles in the area within 10 miles. The scanner is also KITT's most vulnerable area. Occasionally, the bar can pulse in different patterns and sweep rapidly or very slowly.

Glen A. Larson, the creator of both ‘Knight Rider’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’ has stated that the scanner is a nod to the 'Battlestar Galactica' characters, the Cylons, and even used the iconic Cylon eye scanner audio to that effect. He stated that the two shows have nothing else in common and to remove any fan speculation, stated in the Season One 'Knight Rider' DVD audio-comments, that he simply reused the scanning light for KITT because he liked the effect.

That would have been a great crossover, even in deep background!  But I’ll respect the creator’s decree….  (I just wish he did consider the possibility that Wilton Knight did incorporate Cylon tech into K.I.T.T.)

But there have been crossovers which qualify the car for inclusion…..

Here they are relegated to the background chasing missiles across the country; the real story is Dalton's, giving David Hasselhoff time away to prepare for his wedding to actress Catherine Hickland.

O’Bservation:
There was a “spin-off” movie a year later, but it feels more like a prequel as Dalton really was on his own.  (That TV movie gets its own category for it serves to disable a Zonk regarding the two K.I.T.T.s….)

O’Bservation:
The parody in that alternate reality must be based on their own version of the real AI car.  So K.I.T.T. would be a multidimensional.

It should be no surprise that K.I.T.T. would be catnip to producers looking for new ideas to churn out as TV shows.  But it was also a lure for TV commercials during the 1980s and even later.  For the most part, I think Blipvert K.I.T.T. is the real deal; it has to be if it’s William Daniel’s voice is coming through the modulator.  

And that is especially true when K.I.T.T. joined Robbie, B-9, Twiki, WOPR, Commander Data and other AIs at the GE laboratories testing site from throughout the Toobworld timeline.  When K.I.T.T. finally left the GE labs, it might have been teleported to a different location.  But there could have been a glitch in the programming; how else to explain how the car wound up in Hungary?

K.I.T.T. was reunited with David Hasselhoff in a season 1 episode of the variety show/talent show America's Got Talent, on which Hasselhoff was a judge. A performer brought a replica of K.I.T.T. onto center stage as scenery during her burlesque act.

The performer was Michelle L’Amour, but there is no indication in the IMDb as to what episode it was.

O’Bservation:
This TV movie disables the Zonk of K.I.T.T. being a reality in Toobworld at the same time it is known as a TV series by TV characters in other shows.

Here’s how it works:

I’m sticking with my belief that this is a prequel to the ‘Knight Rider’ episode "Mouth Of The Snake"; so this has to take place less than two years earlier, when the televersion of ‘Knight Rider’ began getting broadcast.  That’s because at one point, Willard was in his home watching a ‘Knight Rider’ episode.  (Although dialogue was heard, it doesn’t have to match up with the actual episode from the Trueniverse; Toobworld has often twisted the facts about actual episodes of other TV show.)

Dalton wouldn’t have known Willard had been watching that show, so there would be no reason for him to be surprised upon meeting a real-life TV character two years later.  But at least it establishes there is no Zonk in having both versions of a character at the same time in the same dimension.

Welcome to the TVXOHOF, K.I.T.T.!  I’m not sure, but you may be the first Hall of Fame member to reside in the garage.

The Television Crossover Hall of Fame has inducted many products into the Hall in the past – the New York Chronicle, the New York Ledger, the LA Tribune, Playpen Magazine, Morley Cigarettes, Slush-0 and Smeat among them.  I could be wrong on this, but this may be the first time an actual product from the Trueniverse has been allowed into the TVXOHOF.  But these are strange prime-times we live in….

PURELL

From Wikipedia:
Purell is an American brand of hand sanitizer invented in 1988, and introduced to the consumer market in 1997, by GOJO Industries. Its primary component is ethyl alcohol (70% v/v), and is used by wetting one's hands thoroughly with the product, then briskly rubbing one's hands together until dry.

Purell was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2006, then reacquired by GOJO in 2010. That year, Purell Green Certified Instant Hand Sanitizer became the first hand sanitizer to meet EcoLogo CCD-170 standards.

In 2020, some of Purell's claims, including that it kills "99.99% of most common germs", have been met with regulatory warnings to desist the claim.

During the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, GOJO faced unprecedented demand for Purell products due to its reputation as a leading name-brand for hand sanitizer. Starting immediately as cases began to rise in the United States, Purell products ran out-of-stock and remained largely unavailable to the general public, with new shipments being prioritized to medical and professional customers. Purell's products were still hard to find in July 2020, despite GOJO producing more than twice the amount of hand sanitizer in 2020 than in 2019. GOJO has stated it is currently investing in further strategies to source ingredients and substantially increase manufacturing space for use by mid-2021.

It should be O’Bvious why I’m acknowledging its presence in Toobworld, but the citizens of Earth Prime-Time were using the original instead of a knock-off before the current pandemic.  Sheldon Cooper would probably be in a catatonic state if it didn’t exist; and the hand sanitizer was a major plot point throughout the latest season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, written and filmed before the pandmic.

(One of the signatures of the Latte Larry experience was a bottle of hand sanitizer at every table, along with the “no defecation” rule.)

At the end of Season 10, Latte Larry’s tragically burns to the ground after one of his employees mishandles his self-warming coffee mug devices, and one of the most harrowing images, in hindsight, is a closeup on a stockpile of Purell melting in the flames.

“All anyone thought when they saw the final episode was, ‘Oh my god, you burned all that Purell!'” Schaffer said. “It wasn’t really what we were thinking about in 2019,” which was when they were writing and filming the 10th season.

And then came the denouement, the burning-down of Latte Larry’s. The fire happens for a number of reasons, but it gets worse because of Larry’s Purell obsession. As his vast stores of Purell bottles, which he provides at every table, ignites, the entire block turns into an inferno. And when that happens, he accidentally says “fuck you” to the world, pre- and post-coronavirus.

Welcome to the Hall, Purell.  I would shake your hand, but of course you don’t have any.  

And besides, that would defeat your purpose.

O’BSERVATION

Just a quick programming note – We’re coming up to the end of the year and even in lockdown, things are going to be off-kilter for Yours Viewly here at Toobworld Central.  We still have the Christmas Honors entry to the TVXOHOF to be presented on Christmas Day, but this entry marks the last of the Friday Hall of Famers, not only for the year but forever.

I’ll still be doing the monthly showcases, plus the Birthday and Christmas Honors List, and sadly, also the memorial tributes.  (Hopefully we won’t have that many.  Actually, considering it’s 2020 and we're in a pandemic, I thought there would have been many more, thanks to COVID-19.)

I may continue inducting the Toobworld televersions of real TV shows; I enjoyed those.  But I may save those for the Birthday Honors entry.  We’ll see….

O'BSERVATIONS - "KERBLAM!"

"KERBLAM!"

This was another episode which had the nostalgic air of an RTD episode.  A futuristic poke at a modern day situation, Kerb!am was a galactic retailer similar to Amazon today.  A lot of it was fun and funny, but then the darkness struck quickly wiith one of the most cold-hearted plot twists I've ever seen in the series.

Kyra Arlo reminded me of Raffalo in "The End of the World".  Perhaps even to the point where I could get a "Born To Rerun" post out of it.  Just sayin'.

The main guest star was Julie Hesmondhalgh, whom I only knew from the third season of 'Broadchurch', and she was one of the few things I liked about that season.  What an incredible actress!  When I heard that Chris Chibnall might be thinking in terms of actors with whom he had previously worked in terms of casting the Doctor, and with the rumors that the Thirteenth Incarnation would be a woman, I immediately thought of Ms. Hesmondhalgh.  I thought she could bring a "troughtonesque" quality to the role. 

So even though I really liked her in this role, I was sorry she wasn’t saved for a future shot at playing the Doctor.  Not that that has ever been a hindrance before, as Colin Baker and Peter Capaldi could attest.  And at least now she can make that extra beaucoup bucks on the convention circuit..

We got callbacks to the show’s previous history right from the get-go, with the Doctor getting a Kerb!am delivery of a new fez.  (I’ve seen a meme in which the Eleventh Incarnation says he should order a new fez, followed by a picture of her finally getting the purchase.) 

Once again, I found one of the guest characters to be a worthy candidate for at least a trip in the TARDIS – “Twirly”, the original operating system for Kerb!am.  But dialogue would probably be limited as it would be focused on its programmed functions.  And there’s not enough room for dialogue for the team she has now!  (Also there is that niggling problem that it caused a death to make a point….)  Still, it would have been nice to have something like Handles around again.  But then again, it wasn’t hers to take.

Kerb!am is the kind of story detail which ‘Doctor Who’ can revisit someday, even if only for a passing reference.

Wander the halls of the Television Crossover Hall Of Fame (located in Joyville, Ct.), and you'll see that some of the exhibits are dedicated to products and to places as well:

In fact, there may even be plenty of other shows that are now users of Let's Potato Chips.  After all, I'm setting up this article back in August of 2014 when I first found an article online celebrating this trivial tidbit.

One good thing about having the Let's Potato Chips brand in the TVXOHOF?  There's always something to snack on if you get locked in for the night.....
