TAKEN TO THE BATES MOTEL

From the "Coming Soon" site:

The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Vikings star Clive Standen has been cast in NBC’s 'Taken' TV series as CIA operative Bryan Mills, a younger version of the Liam Neeson character from the film franchise.

Homeland‘s Alexander Carry is set to write the script for the pilot episode and will executive produce alongside filmmaker Luc Besson, who wrote and produced the three films and directed the first. Matthew Gross, Edouard de Vesinne and Thomas Anargyros will also executive produce. Alex Graves (Game of Thrones, Homeland) will direct the pilot.

The 'Taken' TV series will offer a prequel of sorts to the films, exploring the early life of the Liam Neeson character. Despite the 'Taken' TV series following a younger Mills, though, it will be set in present day, serving as a prequel to the film franchise in the same way that 'Bates Motel' serves as a prequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s "Psycho".

I couldn't use 'Bates Motel' in Earth Prime-Time because the films were pulled into the TV Universe by a TV movie starring Anthony Perkins himself as Norman Bates.  So this got me thinking - why not put 'Taken' into the same dimension as 'Bates Motel' since they're similar in nature - TV shows based on movies that serve as prequels but set in the modern day?

Let me know if this arrangement makes sense to you.....

TUESDAY NEWS DAY - ONE GROUNDHOG DAY AT A TIME?

I made a vow to myself not to waste time on writing about TV shows while they're still in the casting stage and not even past the sold pilot episode period.  It was just a waste of my time.  But when it comes to TV shows being made for Netflix, I think it's a safe bet that the show will get "on the air" and become part of the Toobworld dynamic.

Such a show will be the new version of 'One Day At A Time'.  Sadly the show was refreshed in people's memories because of the fairly recent death of Pat Harrington who played Schneider the building super in the series.  Normally a remake would be banned from Earth Prime-Time but it seems that there will be enough differences between the two series that they'll probably be sharing nothing more than the title and the slimmest of connections by way of a Life situation that must get repeated throughout the world.

Along with the late Mr. Harrington, the original version of 'One Day At A Time' also starred the late Bonnie Franklin as Ann Romano with Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli as her daughters.  On occasion, Nanette Fabray showed up as Ann's mother.  The basic storyline was that Ann had divorced her husband (played occasionally by Joseph Campanella) and now trying to make a new life for herself and her daughters.

In the most general of terms, the new series will be the same.  Only this time out, the woman, Penelope, will be Cuban-American and raising a daughter and a son.  She'll get help - somewhat - from her Cuban-born mother, to be played by Rita Moreno.  Penelope will have been trained as a medical specialist and served in the Gulf* but is now the manager of a doctor's office with dreams of becoming a doctor herself one day.  (Ann Romano went into advertising.)

The one thing they will share in common is that they each have/had a building super named Schneider.  And that's not such an unreasonable coincidence, certainly nothing to get banished to the Land O' Remakes for.

So if you put together a chart showing both shows' main points in comparison with each other, you can see that the main Toobworld could easily handle both shows.

Once the series begins its run, I'll check it out in order to see if I can do a theory of relateeveety between the two Schneiders.  It might prove worthwhile.

And a big thanks to Rob Buckley for giving me the link to the story.....

BY ANY OTHER NAME - RUSTY FRIENDS

'MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY'
"THE BOWLING PARTNERS"
Danny is hopeful that Rusty will ask him to be his partner at an upcoming Father and Son bowling tournament.

In the guest cast:
Michael Winkelman...
Dale

Craig Marshall...
Jimmy

Always watching TV shows with an eye to how to use it in my Earth Prime-Time "work", I decided to check out the careers of Rusty's two friends at Herky's bowling alley.  And this just jumped out at me:

'THE JOEY BISHOP SHOW'
"JOEY ENTERTAINS RUSTY'S FRATERNITY"
Rusty Hamer, who played Rusty Williams on Make Room for Daddy (1953) (AKA "The Danny Thomas Show"), plays the same character who is now a college student and comes to stay with the Barnes family for a while in the second of three guest appearances. Joey and three of his no-good pals help Rusty and his fellow pledges carry out a most unusual fraternity initiation stunt.

And in that guest cast:
Craig Marshall...
Pledge

Michael Winkelman...
Pledge

As far as I''m concerned, those two pledges were Dale & Jimmy, bringing the two sitcoms even closer together.  The three friends must have enrolled in the same NYC college* and then pledged to the same fraternity.

* Was the name of Rusty's college ever mentioned on 'The Joey Bishop Show'?  If not, I would fill in the blanks by making it be Hudson University in order to expand the Great Mosaic of Toobworld........

TVXOHOF - A SCALIA TALKING POINT

More ruminations on the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.....

For the Television Crossover Hall of Fame, I already have three appearances by one actor in the role of Scalia to not only be eligible for membership but that Jack Shearer's portrayal should be the official portrait for the gallery.

But as I've often mentioned in the past, just a reference to a particular member of the League of Themselves in a fictional context is enough to be counted towards their membership in the TVXOHOF. With that mention, it means that the person invoked actually exists in Toobworld.

And so it is with Justice Scalia....

"I have four bestsellers out.
How many does Antonin Scalia have

Arthur Branch:
"You also look better in a cocktail dress."

TVXOHOF UPDATE - A SUPREME MEMBERSHIP COMING

Hi Dere!

I haven't been around for a few weeks as I've been working on another adventure in Toobworld.  One day I even hope to get these stories published.

But I wanted to check in with Team Toobworld to bring an update to the future membership in the Television Crossover Hall Of Fame.

By now you've all must have heard that Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away over the weekend.  Did you know his televersion is eligible for induction into the Hall?  And three of those portrayals were all by the same actor and arguably could be all considered as being part of Earth Prime-Time.  So that alone makes this particular televersion the official portrayal of Justice Scalia in the TVXOHOF.

Jack Shearer played the role in episodes of 'Picket Fences' and 'Boston Legal' and in the HBO TV movie "Recount" (about the debacle that was the Florida "hanging chad" scandal that gave the election to George W. Bush (also a member of the TVXOHOF.)

I've already settled on his induction for November of 2017.  November is the month traditionally used for the Newsmakers & Newscasters, in which the televersions of politicians, many times a President of the United States, is inducted.  It seems to be the best time for the "ceremony", but I can't do it this year since I'm running a League of Themselves theme for 2016 and I have a very special lady in mind for that.  (In fact I built the year around her with that theme.)

Until next time, my friends!

VIDEO SUNDAY - THE OSHIKURU LINKS

A big thanks to Thomas Holbrook, Master Archivist for finding this musical crossover......

And somewhere out there is an 'Oshikuru' fan who wanted to see that anime so badly that he made his own version of the animation to run behind the theme song.

I'm sending this out to my "nephew" Eli Cleary, whose birthday is tomorrow.

iOWA CAUCUS AS SEEN ON TV

A few days late with this.....

Here are the results of the Iowa Caucuses on Monday:

So that stands as a difference with the results as seen in Toobworld;

(From 'The Good Wife')

I doubt any other TV show will cover the primaries, so this will probably be the only deviation from the reality.....

TVXOHOF, FEBRUARY 2016: B.B. KING

I decided last year that I wanted to induct qualified members of the League of Themselves as soon as I've heard of their deaths.  The first example of that this year was David Bowie just a few weeks ago.  But there was somebody who died last year whom I could have added to all the tributary inductions like those for Leonard Nimoy, Dick Van Patten, Frank Gifford, and Yogi Berra.  However I held off so that I could honor him during February, the month dedicated to Black History.

I'm hoping to continue this tradition for as long as I can, but qualified characters of color (I love alliteration!) are not that plentiful.  And many of them are in the League of Themselves.  So it's not like I'm trying to prevent them from their special honor; it's just that I want them to get their special showcase and keep this Black History Month tradition alive.  In fact there's another celebrity who recently passed away who made enough appearances in different shows to be so honored, but he'll have to wait until next February.

In the meantime......

Ladies and gentlemen, may I present

B.B. KING

From Wikipedia:
Riley B. "B.B." King (September 16, 1925 – May 14, 2015) was an American blues singer, guitarist, songwriter, and record producer.

Rolling Stone ranked King at No. 6 on its 2011 list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time. King introduced a sophisticated style of soloing based on fluid string bending and shimmering vibrato that influenced many later electric blues guitarists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987 and is considered one of the most influential blues musicians of all time, earning the nickname "The King of the Blues", and one of the "Three Kings of the Blues Guitar" along with Albert and Freddie.  King was known for performing tirelessly throughout his musical career, appearing at more than 200 concerts per year on average into his 70s. In 1956, he reportedly appeared at 342 shows.

Touched by an Angel

THEORIES OF RELATEEVEETY: FAHEY SIBLINGS

With the latest episode of 'Scorpion', we came up with this theory of "relateeveety" for two of the more recent Toobworld citizens portrayed by Jeff Fahey......

'Scorpion'
Kenneth Dodd
- "Sun of a Gun" (2016)

'The Librarians'
Isaac Stone
- "And What Lies Beneath the Stones" (2015)

Jacob and Isaac Stone were twin brothers who were raised separately after their Jewish parents divorced, probably at some point around 1955 when they were quite young.  Kenneth went to live with their mother while Isaac stayed behind with Dad in Oklahoma.  Isaac took over the family business, Stone Family Rigging and Pipeline, and had a son born in 1972 whom he named Jacob after a brother he barely remembered.

Meanwhile, the former Mrs. Stone, who had converted to Judaism in order to marry, renounced the faith and married a defense industry lobbyist named Kenneth Dodd from California.  And they decided to change young Jacob's name to that of his step-dad who adopted him.  Kenneth Dodd grew up in Southern California where his father's influence led to him joining the military and rose to become a consultant on weaponry.  He also married and had a son named Sylvester born in 1993.

This would make Jake Stone the older first cousin to Sly Dodd.

As always, much of this is conjecture on my part.  Should either series bring their Fahey character back which might void this theory, so be it.  The Toobword Dynamic is always in flux.

RECASTAWAYS - GREAT CAESAR'S GHOST

One of the recastway splainins which I came up with in regards to historical televersions (of which I'm very proud) is specific to 'Bewitched'.  Every so often Samantha or some other witch - usually Aunt Clara - conjured a figure right out of History.  However, it's my claim that the only one that was the true historical figure was Ben Franklin, since he was played by the official Franklin of Toobworld, Fredd Wayne.

As for the others?  They were summoned as fictionals out of books that could found in the Westport home of Darrin and Sam Stephens.  Usually they were originally illustrations of the original person - Napoleon, Washington, etc. - but in the case of Julius Caesar, he was magically transformed from a photograph.

How did the author get a photograph of Julius Caesar?  He didn't.  It was actually a photograph of Jay Robinson as Caligula in the big screen movie "The Robe" which starred Richard Burton and Jean Simmons.

But this author, who probably wrote text books for the school system in TV's Texas, used that picture of the mad emperor to illustrate an article in his book about Julius Caesar.  (And the publisher, probably Whitestone Press, never caught the error in the proof-reading stage.)

We know "The Robe" exists as a movie in Toobworld: Gracie Allen mentioned it in a 'Burns And Allen' episode.

As for Cleopatra, she was probably summoned from a photograph in that same book from an unknown movie unique to Toobworld.  The Queen of the Nile would have been played by the televersion of Elizabeth Thompson, whose only other big screen accomplishments (at least in the real world) were in "Come Blow Your Horn" and "Critic's Choice".

SHOWS & MOVIES CITED:

  • 'Bewitched'
  • 'The Librarians'
  • 'The George Burns And Gracie Allen Show'
  • "The Robe"
  • "Come Blow Your Horn"
  • "Critic's Choice"
