MICHAEL CAINE
AS SEEN ON:
'Saturday Night Live'
AS PLAYED BY:
Tom Hanks
Sir Michael Caine has been imitated on 'Saturday Night Live' twice in the past - once by Phil Hartman (which was seen as part of a two week salute to Phil Hartman here at Inner Toob) and by Seth Meyer in another sketch.
But they're not the only ones who like to imitate the actor whose real name is Maurice Mickelwhite.....
What I want to know is: most of these people use variations of the phrase "Not many people know that....." as sort of a touchstone to get in touch with their inner Michael Caine. So where did that come from? Is it a well-known line from one of his movies?

Supposedly, Caine is quite apt to share bits of trivia in conversation, and thus "not many people know that" is something he was heard to say to friends and colleagues over the years. I read that Peter Sellers was the first to use that line in an impression, doing so in a TV appearance he shared with Caine.

Thanks, Hugh!
Hugh is correct. Sellers seems to have started the "not many people know that" line. Because Caine would often talk about obscure facts and trivia. The part where Caine does an impression of himself is from the British talk show, "Parkinson." Also in that interview, he tells a story about how Peter Sellers recorded his impression of Caine on his answering machine which said, "My name's Michael Caine. Peter Sellers isn't in, not many people know that." I think you can find it on YouTube.
