"The Hero"Sam Garret is known to millions of TV viewers as Jed Clayton, U.S. Marshal, but his family--and the people he works with--know that offscreen Garret is one of the great bumblers of all time.
'Jed Clayton, U.S. Marshal' was a TV show within a TV show. When its creator needed inspiration for the character's name, it's pozz'ble, just pozz'ble, that he turned to Clayton City. Clayton City billed itself as the capital of the Old West, and would hold daily recreations of the gunfight between Sheriff Weatherford and a gambler named Manning.
Before his magazines published the serialization of a book about that gunfight, Glenn Howard wanted to find out if the facts were correct. A long-lost diary from that time hinted otherwise about the real outcome to that showdown.
