When a traffic cop in Crane Creek, California, pulled Patrick Jane over for speeding, Jane tried to convince Officer Rowley that they were part of the same fraternity, that they were like a version of the Justice League.

"Would Aquaman give Batman a ticket?"

We know Batman exists in the main TV dimension of Earth Prime-Time - he had his own series back in the sixties, appeared in two TV specials in 1979, and he also made a few commercials and PSA's over the years as well.

But as far as the main Toobworld is concerned, Aquaman should be nothing more than a character in a comic book. And yet he did exist in Earth Prime-Time, which is why Patrick Jane spoke of him as being as real as the Batman......
We know Aquaman exists in the Tooniverse, thanks to 'Super-Friends' and other cartoons based on the DC superheroes. And the dimension of 'The West Wing', in which we also find 'Smallville', has two Aquamen - one appeared in an unintentional back-door pilot episode of the series about Kal-El before he donned the cape and tights; and the other was an actual pilot which never made it to American airwaves, although it did show up in iTunes and other online venues, as well as in overseas TV markets. (And that guarantees its place in the overall TV Universe.)

That second pilot didn't have any connections to 'Smallville', but the producers did admit that if it had gone to series, they would have eventually made the connection through a crossover.
In the main Toobworld, the only major mention of Aquaman has been the motion picture directed by James Cameron and starring Vincent Chase. (There was also a sequel, but that starred Jake Gyllenhaal as Aquaman.)

The way the movie was treated in 'Entourage', it was supposed to be based on the DC comic book hero. But that Aquaman looks nothing like Vince or even Gyllenhaal. He's supposed to be blonde, wearing an orange and green scaly wetsuit. Even Raj Koothrapally knew that!

Unlike the comic books and the Tooniverse, the DC superheroes are staggered in the Toobworld timeline. Wonder Woman was active in the 1940's and then resurfaced again in the 1970's. Superman stood for Truth, Justice, and the American Way in the 1950's, until his death in the early 1960's (according to a Toobworld Central theory). Meanwhile, back in Gotham City (That sounds a lot cooler in my head with the voice of William Dozier!), Batman and Robin patrolled the streets of Gotham City. And then there's the Flash, who had a brief run (Sorry about that, Chief!) in the 1990's. He may still be alive, but I have a feeling his powers have dissipated.

So, based on what Patrick Jane said, if there was a Justice League of America in operation in the main Toobworld today, Aquaman and Batman probably served together at the same time. That's not to say, however, that the real Aquaman of Earth Prime-Time was around in the 1960's when 'Batman' was on the air. I believe the Batman started his crime-fighting career back in the 1950's, when the Justice League of America consisted of him, Superman, and Wonder Woman (with probably the Scarlet Cyclone {left} as well). And because of those two TV specials in 1979, Batman and Robin were probably still active by 1980.

Speaking of those TV specials, we saw other members of the Justice League of America, including the aforementioned Scarlet Cyclone, but not Wonder Woman, Superman, the Flash, or this Aquaman that I claim existed. Wonder Woman was probably on Paradise Island; Barry Allen was more than a decade away from gaining his super-speed powers; and as I mentioned, Superman was dead.

As for Aquaman, he was probably on a mission for the Foundation For Oceanic Research... as seen in 'Man From Atlantis'.

Yep, I'm going there - I'm claiming that "Mark Harris" became better known as Aquaman and teamed up with Batman and the other members of the Justice League - after he quit the Foundation For Oceanic Research once 'Man From Atlantis' ran its course on our TV screens.

Here's a thumbnail biographical sketch of "Mark Harris" from the always reliable (koff! koff!) Wikipedia: [Mark Harris was] an amnesiac man given the name of Mark Harris, believed to be the only surviving citizen of the lost civilization of Atlantis. He possesses exceptional abilities, including the ability to breathe underwater and withstand extreme depth pressures, and superhuman strength. His hands and feet are webbed, his eyes are unusually sensitive to light, and he swims using his arms and legs in a fashion suggestive of how a fish or marine mammal uses its flippers. Following his discovery, he is recruited by the Foundation For Oceanic Research, a governmental agency that explores the depths of the ocean in a sophisticated submarine called the Cetacean. The show only aired until 1978, which left "Mark Harris" on his own to lead whatever life he chose. So I prefer to think he took on the persona of Aquaman, as seen in the comic books, and used his abilities to become a super-hero. And eventually he teamed up with the Batman, which is why Patrick Jane mentioned the pairing. Perhaps even today he's still serving alongside whoever would be the current members of the Justice League of America.
But if he was a member of the JLA, how come he didn't show up in those January 1979 specials with Batman, Robin, the Riddler and the others? Tying into a real-world event as TV shows often do, perhaps he was still helping to battle the after-effects of Hurricane Rita which struck the Phillipines in October of 1978 and killed more than 400 people. (What kind of after-effects? I don't know - maybe the storm eventually jarred open an entrance into the undersea world of the Sea Devils and let some of them loose!) The look of "Mark Harris" would splain away why James Cameron cast the dark-haired Vincent Chase as Aquaman. Cameron may have bought the rights to the title of the comic book, but it was the "real-life" Aquaman's life story that he was interested in telling.

There was no way he would want to have called it "Man From Atlantis", because as so often happens in disabling TV Zonks, there was also a show by that name within the "reality" of Toobworld. Apparently the word got out about the existence of "Mark Harris" and so that same shadowy organization which made movies and TV shows about the Time Lord known as the Doctor, and about the agents of U.N.C.L.E., and others - in order to confuse the public about their actual existence (I call them "UN-REEL".) - did the same for "Mark Harris", thus keeping the public from finding out he was also Aquaman.

There were two mentions of this TV show over the years in the main Toobworld. Back in 1989, Del-Boy Trotter invoked the name of the show while talking about a fish stall he once worked. And at the 8:00 "Mr. Memory" nightclub show on April 4th, 1999, Mr. Memory correctly answered the question about the number of episodes for the show. (Just as in the real world, there were 17 episodes and that show within a show also starred Patrick Duffy.)

But it probably had even worse of a reputation than it did in the real world, so I'm sure Cameron would much rather have the right to use "Aquaman" as the title for his movie about the life of "Mark Harris".

So there you have it. Until such time -if any! - when an actual Aquaman surfaces (again, sorry about that, Chief!) in the main Toobworld, the DC comic book version is just that - a character in a comic book. But 'The Man From Atlantis' took on that identity after the TV series sank (I know! I know!), which is why the "Aquaman" movie within the "reality" of Toobworld had a dark-haired hero. And all that from a little pop culture reference on 'The Mentalist'.....

SPLAININ ZONKS - THE CHARACTERS IN DR. HARTLEY'S DREAMSCAPE

It's my belief that the easiest show to de-Zonk so that there were no discrepancies in relation to the rest of the TV Universe was 'Newhart'.  After all, except for the last few minutes of the final episode, everything else was all part of a dream by Dr. Bob Hartley from 'The Bob Newhart Show'.

And we all know how illogical dreams can be!

Michael wants to capture the birth of Stephanie's baby on video.

Michael got a lot of people to record messages about the baby he and Stephanie were about to have - only they had to recite the same phrase that he gave them.  And it wasn't just the people in his life at the TV studio, but also a few famous people as well.

Seen in the episode but uncredited were:

• JEAN SMART
• PATRICK DUFFY
• GERALD MacRANEY
• ANGELA LANSBURY

Of course, I can shrug it off that their appearances were just Newhart's manifestations of these actors.  But where did he know them from?

I don't want them to be members of the League of Themselves who were appearing in connections to the CBS TV shows in which they were starring at the time.  (Luckily none of their TV shows were mentioned, but there were a few suggestions pointing to those shows.)

They can be those actors, but I would prefer that Dr. Hartley knew them from movies they made or fictional TV shows within TV shows.  But I think I better lock it down to some specific examples to keep their appearance here Zonk-Free.

JEAN SMART

Unfortunately, Dr. Hartley's weird dream happened in 1982 and all six years of his adventures as innkeeper/author/talk show host Dick Louden were over by the next morning. Ms. Smart wouldn't have a big movie until 1984 with "Protocol", and Bob couldn't have seen that until after his dream journey.  So she really couldn't have had such a big impact on Bob to the point that he would know who she was. (And I don't see her going all the way to Chicago to consult a psychologist.)

I think this may be a case in which we weren't seeing Jean Smart as herself, but as her actual character from 'Designing Women' - Charlene Frazier Stillfield.  Now, that show didn't start until 1986 and 'Newhart' had been on the air since 1982, but that doesn't matter!  Only to the nigglers who don't want to see these TV shows as anything but TV shows.  But Charlene existed on the same timeline as Bob in the main Toobworld and so she was alive before he went to bed that night.  And that means she may have crossed Bob's radar earlier, perhaps before either one of them had actually shown up on our Trueniverse screens.

Here's some information about Charlene.....

Though often guided by her psychic adviser, Charlene often finds herself in trouble while looking for a respectable man to date. She is often the target of con men. She has a short-lived romance with Shadow, a secret government agent, before romancing Mason Dudd, an overweight entrepreneur, who leaves her for Japan. Charlene meets her soul mate in widowed Air Force Colonel Bill Stillfield, whom she eventually marries. She gives birth to their daughter, Olivia, early in season four. In a dream, she was visited by entertainer Dolly Parton as Olivia's Guardian Movie Star, who confirmed to Charlene the gender and name of her child. I suppose Charlene might have needed a therapist because of that track record with men, but just like with Jean Smart, I can't see her traveling all the way to Chicago to be a patient of Dr. Hartley's.  That's one hell of a commute!

'Designing Women' is not free of the Zonk curse - too many shows referenced it.  Among them:

• 'Married With Children'
• '30 Rock'
• 'Scrubs'
• 'Entourage' (Roger even won an Emmy for his work on it!)

But the best had to come from 'Roseanne':

And uh, they just sat around all the time talking and talking, and yammering and yammering. And they killed every single man who ever came over there, except for one who they kept as a pet. And then one time these two princesses left, and then these other two came on and they really stunk, and...

So let's disable that Zonk and splain away how Charlene Frazier showed up in Bob's dream:

The 'Designing Women' TV series is about the Sugarbaker sisters and their co-workers, but it's not a sitcom for the TV characters who watch it.  It's a reality program, at the dawn of that programming fad.  So Bob really did know about Charlene Frazier.  (She would not become Mrs. Stillfield until after Bob woke up.)

PATRICK DUFFY

Patrick Duffy's career has been mostly in TV - prime time soaps like 'Dallas', a couple of sitcoms, even a soap opera plus plenty of TV movies.  And then there was "Mark Harris" - 'The Man From Atlantis'. (The name was "Markaris" originally I think?)  That show generated a little heat when it came to Zonks, surprisingly far less than I thought - it was only referenced in the Britcom 'Only Fools And Horses' and in the spin-off from 'The X-Files', 'The Lone Gunmen'.

It could be that Dr. Hartley knew of Mark Harris from a documentary about the amphibious man.  By 1982, about four years after the mer-man had last been sighted in Toobworld, his secret may have been revealed to the world.  And even worse, he might not even have been still alive.

But there's no ignoring the juggernaut that was 'Dallas'.  So many TV shows made reference to it as a TV show even though they were sharing the same TV dimension.  Even over in the UK on sitcoms like 'Are You Being Served?'

And it's no wonder - just about everybody in Toobworld will be deemed worthy of a TV show.  It's the only way to combat the Zonks.  And those would be cast with actors who looked like the people they were portraying.  So here in Earth Prime, Patrick Duffy played Bobby Ewing whose televersion was portrayed by the televersion of Patrick Duffy in Earth Prime-Time.  See?  Easily explained.  

If your head's hurting from that, take a seat and lean forward, breathing deeply and slowly.

Therefore, I didn't want to resort to it, but I'm afraid that really was Patrick Duffy whom Bob was dreaming about.  I really don't think Bobby Ewing or the man from Atlantis would have seeped into his subconscious so strongly.

GERALD MacRANEY

'Major Dad' was mentioned in episodes of 'Seinfeld' and 'Saved By The Bell' - apparently there was a TV producer out there in Toobworld who thought the love life of Major John "Mac" MacGillis and Polly Cooper was worthy of a TV show.  (He was a ramrod-straight Marine and she was a liberal journalist with three daughters.  And when they met, it was murder!  Oops, wrong show.)

In this case, I think once again we have an actual person from Toobworld rather than an actor who played the character.  And this time Dr. Bob Hartley actually did meet him.  It's pozz'ble, just pozz'ble, that early in his military career, MacGillis was stationed at the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Chicago... and hated it.  He may have been ordered to consult Dr. Hartley to eliminate his inner rage at such an assignment.  And that would be how Bob knew him, finally seeing him again in a reality TV show about the love life of Mac and Polly.

ANGELA LANSBURY

This one was the easiest of the bunch!  And that's if you wanted to consider her as Angela Lansbury or as the mystery novelist Jessica Fletcher.

Ms. Lansbury had appeared in quite a few movies which Dr. Hartley would have been familiar with - "The Court Jester", "The Harvey Girls", "The Three Musketeers", "The Long, Hot Summer", and "State Of The Union", among others.  But it would be in two dark psychological thrillers he would best know her - "Gaslight" and "The Manchurian Candidate".  Just those two movies alone would have made a deep enough impression on Bob for him to summon her up again in his never-ending dream.

But could it have been Jessica Fletcher instead?

There is a fly in the ointment for that theoretical crossover, however.  It is in 1984 that her first novel - "The Corpse Danced At Midnight" - was published.  Bob's dream was in 1982.  But have no fear, the Monitaur is here!  

Jessica Fletcher must have had several short stories published in a mystery magazine before she wrote her novel!

Reading those stories probably impressed Dr. Hartley greatly.  Perhaps it even triggered the hidden desire to be a mystery writer himself.  During the course of the dream we saw that "Dick Louden" had written his own murder mystery, "Murder At The Stratleigh".  It proved to be so hypnotic to the other denizens of his dream that you could hear a pig drop!

So there's my De-Zonking puzzle for the day, a little more complicated than probably necessary for a dreamscape show.  But hey - it keeps me off the streets......

SUPER SIX LIST - BUONO NO BUENO



I'm still operating without a computer at Toobworld Central, so anything besides the daily League of Themselves will be a little skint. I may be doing a few of these entries - the Super Six List.

I just saw Victor Buono in an episode of 'I Spy' and in the pilot for 'The Wild, Wild West' this week, and it struck me how much I miss his style of acting. So I decided to come up with this Super Six List of his best TV villains.....

1] KING TUT (Professor William Omaha McElroy) - 'Batman'
Probably this will be his best-known character for eternity. He played the flamboyance to the hilt and made it seem normal for the character. The added twist that he was a split personality gave it some pathos.

2] COUNT CARLOS MARIO VINCENZO ROBESPIERRE MANZEPPI - 'The Wild, Wild West'
Count Manzeppi pales in comparison to Dr. Loveless when it comes to creating a recurring villain for Secret Service agents West and Gordon, but he does fit the steam punk theme well.  (In the pilot episode he played a Chinese businessman named Wing Fat, who has inspired another Super Six list, coming soon.)

3] KARAFATMA - 'I Spy'
I just saw this one for the first time. The Turkish spy thought he found a way to overcome his shortcomings in espionage, but when he was trumped by Scottie, it probably sealed his doom.

4] BEN HUGGINS - 'Perry Mason'
Huggins was an updated version of Fagin from 'Oliver Twist' and it was perfect casting!  That episode ("The Case Of The Twice-Told Twist") was also in color, the only one to be seen as such.  .

5] COLONEL HUBRIS - 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' [pictured above]
Somewhere I have a quote from Hubris in my files, but I haven't been able to find it. Just as one of his henchmen is about to dispatch the other one who failed the Colonel, Hubris says something to the effect of "Do enjoy the journey. They say getting there is half the fun." But don't quote me on that!

Hubris was in the episode "The Deadly Goddess Affair' and could have been in another episode the next season but Buono was unavailable. Jaques Aubuchon filled in as a Colonel Hamid.

6] MR. SCHUBERT - 'The Man From Atlantis'
Buono's last great recurring villain for Toobworld. The world's oceans suited his outsized talents.......

BONUS:
JULIUS LIMEWAY - "GOODNIGHT, MY LOVE"
I really need to find this movie, a fantastic pastiche of old Bogie detective films. With Richard Boone and Michael Dunn as the private eyes (not your usual!), Barbara Bain as the femme fatale, and Buono as the Fat Man. The lingering shot of him left behind in the restaurant booth, knowing that his doom was nigh, has stayed with me.

AQUA-MANAGEMENT

The WB has finally announced who will be their next small screen hero in the upcoming series 'Aquaman'. Twenty-eight-year-old newcomer Will Toale will star in the title role in the new series from 'Smallville' creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

The Florida-born Toale worked as a model before landing a supporting role in "A Streetcar Named Desire" at Broadway's Roundabout Theater alongside Natasha Richardson and John C. Reilly.

Broadway, Tennessee Williams, Richardson and Reilly.... no small potatoes!

The pilot is expected to be shot in Miami, and the series will start as part of the WB’s fall offering lineup. (There are reports that 'Aquaman' will not be the title for the series.)

"In the comic, Aquaman's the lost king of Atlantis," said Gough. "But in our version, he is Arthur Curry, this twenty-something who owns a dive shop."

I'll have to take a wait-and-see attitude on this new 'Aquaman'; wait for more information. If the show remains independent of 'Smallville', then everything is fine, because the 'Smallville' universe (which also houses 'The West Wing' and 'Mr. Sterling') already has its own 'Aquaman'. The trouble and splainins begin if a crossover ever happens.

And how could they resist? Same network, same producers, and 'Smallville' is enjoying some of its best ratings ever. Kal-El may not have his cape yet, but he's got some great coattails to ride.

So if they do cross over the new 'Aquaman' to 'Smallville', a splainin will have to be found as to why he no longer looks like Alan Ritchson in that stand-alone episode, 'Aqua'.

If he never crosses over, we can leave him beached in some alt. TV dimension. But which one?

The Tooniverse has its own Aquaman; a traditional rendering of the superhero based on the comic books. And in the main Toobworld, Aquaman is just a comic book character, and a joke at that considering the scorn heaped on the concept by Vince Chase's 'Entourage'.

But their contempt comes from ignorance about a race of mermen that actually do exist in Toobworld. Most notably there is Mark Harris, 'The Man From Atlantis', but various merfolk have been seen in episodes of 'Doctor Who' ("The Underwater Menace") and a tele-flick for 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch' ("Sabrina Down Under").

According to the comic books, Arthur Curry is the son of a human father and an Atlantean mother. (In a similar vein, 'Fantastic Journey' featured Liana, who was born of a human mother and an Atlantean father.)

The fact that Aquaman is a comic book character in Toobworld doesn't negate the possibility that he actually exists there. Superman is regarded mostly as a comic book character in today's Toobworld, but he actually did exist, serving Metropolis and saving the world until his death in the early 1960s. (Whole other story!)

But even while he was alive, Superman was a comic book character, as seen in "The Birthday Letter" episode of 'The Adventures of Superman'. I would guess that Supes okayed its publication, so long as all profits went to some charity to help the kids.

And after his death, somebody - perhaps Superman's pal Jimmy Olsen? - was able to reveal the full story of the Man of Steel. And that's how Jerry 'Seinfeld' knew that Superman's birth-father was Jor-El.

So if the King of Atlantis is out there as Arthur Curry in Earth Prime-Time he has not revealed himself.

He wouldn't have been hard to miss, though, with that garish orange body-shirt!

CROSSING ZONE: CONNECTING "WONDER WOMAN" TO "THE TWILIGHT ZONE"

Connecting (in a way) to two episodes of 'The Twilight Zone'.  The best I could do for "Two For Tuesday".....

In order to track down the thieves who stole a valuable crystal bowl, Diana Prince followed the leads provided by IRAC the computer - a list of fences in the Washington, DC area who might have an interest in moving the stolen goods.  

One of these men was a fellow named Shubert who hid his fencing operation behind the respectability of a midtown art gallery.  He knew Diana Prince was on to him but he played it cool, thinking that his henchmen could make it look like she died in a tragic car accident.  Of course, since she was also Wonder Woman, Diana Prince was able to put the kibosh on that plan.

To top it off, the crystal bowl had already been stolen from him!  (Probably by the living statue on display in his shop.)

Diana Prince didn't know it, but Shubert was just as alien to this human world as she was.....

Okay, I warned you there would be spoilers......

As it turned out, the planet they were going to was Earth Prime-Time!  Once there, they established new identities and new lives for themselves.  Jody Surka became a doctor even though human anatomy was slightly different from her own.  Under her new name of Dr. Lesley Webber, she gained some fame at the Port Charles General Hospital.

But life didn't work out so well for Jerry Riden.  It was too dangerous to fake a new identity that would pass scrutiny with the federal government if he wanted to begin his new life as a test pilot again.  (The biggest problem was that another astronaut in the secret space program looked just like him - Peter Craig.  And the authorities were already in an uproar when Craig never returned from a mission to another planet.)  He tried other ventures but either they weren't too his liking or the ways of American customs were too foreign to him.

Unfortunately, Riden found that Terran alcohol and his alien biology went together only too well and his life fell apart soon after, with his wife Anne leaving him.  With nowhere else to turn, Jerry Riden took on a new identity and began his new career - dealing in stolen goods.  (He may have taken the name of "Shubert" because the composer was his favorite on this new world.  Or he was tipping his hat to a mysterious benefactor - a billionaire industrialist bent on world domination. Staying young and beautiful, basically looking the same from WWII* to the 1970s was a walk in the park for Wonder Woman.  She had been around since at least the 14th Century!

I imagine when she mentions that she lost her temper 600 years ago, she was probably just a child at the time.  So she was probably having a temper tantrum at the Paradise Island Day Care....

But once she was a young lady among the Amazons on Themiscyra, we can assume that she was involved in many exploits as a [Toob]world savior (superhero not being a term in existence until the arrival of Superman.)

She gives just one example in that quote above - she met Napoleon.  Diana may have had a hand in his capture and exile to Elba.

This seems like fertile territory for TV fanficcers.  (I'm sure those who dabble in the invented universe of comic books might find it of interest as well.)  Think of all the TV characters she may have met (and sometimes fought) down through the centuries:

And along with Dr. Loveless, Princess Diana could have battled against other foes through Time:

Princess Diana would not have assumed the identity of Wonder Woman until World War Two, and that would include her super-hero finery.  So if we find a young Lynda Carter in some other TV role set in the past, maybe a fanficcer could run with that, claiming that her character was really Princess Diana in disguise.....

It's unlikely we will ever see Wonder Woman in Earth Prime-Time ever again - at least as played by Lynda Carter.  Any other actress in the role would automatically place that appearance in an alternate TV dimension.  (The Arrowverse might find room for her.)  Since Princess Diana is basically immortal, she would still look as she did in the 1940s and the 1970s.  But Time has marched on for Lynda Carter - still beautiful, but definitely older.

However, if certain trappings of the old series were not revived for a remake set in "the present" (whenever that might be) - specifically, the recasting of Steve Trevor - then I would have no problem accepting a recastaway of Princess Diana/Diana Prince/Wonder Woman as being the same character seen in the earlier show.

By this point in History, both Toobworld and the real world, our identities are too deeply locked in - with social security numbers, NSA files, the saturation of surveillance cameras everywhere.  Wonder Woman would have realized that she could no longer get away with passing herself off as some relative of the super-heroine seen during WWII and the post-Watergate era.

And so back on Paradise Island, she would have had to resort to plastic surgery, maybe even magic, in order to change her appearance.  Why would it matter so many decades after the fact?  Because at least from the 1970s, there may have been people in her life as Diana Prince who could still be at risk from enemies of Wonder Woman.  And that would be cause enough to change her appearance......

All of these musings on this particular Amazon were inspired by my cousin Coco, who celebrates her (mumphle mumphle) birthday today.  She's a great fan of Wonder Woman in all of her glory, which explains the topic in this last day of the month meant to celebrate the TV Western.

I'm sorry if you checked this out, thinking it was my salute to Princess Diana on the 20th anniversary of her death.  The timing just worked out that way.  But I will be setting up her photo album on my TVXOHOF page at Facebook soon.  She was inducted into the TV Crossover Hall of Fame in 2016.

* I would not be surprised if Diana had adventures in World War I similar to those seen in the movie blockbuster of this past summer.  But that's the Wonder Woman of the Cineverse and has nothing to do with Earth Prime-Time.
