TUBULAR KNELLS - REMEMBERING NOTRE DAME CATHEDRAL

On  Monday, April 15th, the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris was destroyed in a massive fire.  At this time, it looks to have been accidental.  I would think something went wrong during the renovations and the fact that the building was wrapped in wooden scaffolding didn’t help.  Thankfully, no lives were lost.

I haven’t found many instances of the Cathedral of Notre Dame being cited in the TV shows – so far! – but it still ranks as one of the three most used shots to establish a TV show’s location in Paris (along with the Eiffel Tower and the Arc d’ Triomph.) 

Of course, in popular culture it is most often seen in adaptations of Victor Hugo’s novel “The Hunchback Of Notre Dame” which has been filmed since the days of silent movies, with even an animated Disney version

But as for Toobworld, or rather, the greater TV Universe, there have been several TV movies, all of which can be relegated to other TV dimensions in order to spread the wealth.  And with the TV version of the Tooniverse, there was an animated feature as well. (But the animation quality did not match that of Disney’s.)

Despite the difference in animation styles, two other references to the Cathedral are included in that same Tooniverse.  One would be the series ‘The Magical Adventures of Quasimodo’ and then there’s this spin-off from another animated TV series:

“THE RUGRATS IN PARIS: THE MOVIE”

The Rugrats travel to Paris, France, where Chuckie hopes to find a new mother and keep his father from marrying an evil business woman.  

Wishes come true in Rugrats in Paris The Movie, and love makes its way into the hearts of those young, old and overseas. The Bullwinkle Show  
The Three Moosketeers: Parts 5-6 (1961)

It’s listed in the IMDb, “Old Reliable”, as being a reference to the Cathedral, but I watched it on YouTube and heard no mention of Notre Dame.  (I’ll watch it again before I post this.)

And finally we come to the main Toobworld, Earth Prime-Time. 

There was a TV series about Quasimodo, back in 1966 which served as the Toobworld adaptation of the novel.  Unfortunately, all seven episodes appear to be lost.  Even so, it stands as the Quasimodo of Toobworld since it was first among actual series adaptations.

And if the Cathedral was seen in that series, it was the same televersion of the Cathedral as seen in other TV shows.

The Musketeers  
Sleight of Hand (2014)

The Musketeers were led to believe Vadim was plotting to kill the King and Queen....

Richelieu:

if I was planning to kill the king, how would I do it?

Treville:

Notre Dame. The royal family always shows themselves to the people after Easter mass. It’s tradition.

Richelieu:  Not anymore....

But he really intended to rob the palace while everybody was involved with the attack at Notre Dame.

It would stand to reason that the Cathedral would figure into any iteration of Dumas’ novel.  But this is the only one in which a reference is listed in the IMDb keywords.  I wonder if it was at least mentioned if not seen in the 1960s series of ‘The Three Musketeers’ which starred Jeremy Brett and Brian Blessed? 

Fantasy Island  
We're Not Worthy (1998)

Cindy was transformed into a beautiful woman while a man she met at the hotel was transformed into Quasimodo because he wanted the chance to ring the bells of Notre Dame.  (Mr. Roarke was able to create a vortex which allowed him to travel back in Time to the era of the Hugo novel.

The Fourth Doctor and Romana II walked past the Notre Dame after the randomiser took them to Paris in 1979. (TV: City of Death)

The TARDIS Wiki also claim this:
Unlike most of the Earth, the Notre Dame Cathedral was left untouched during the Year That Never Was. When the time came to help the Tenth Doctor, a number of surviving humans gathered in front of the ancient building and chanted the word "Doctor", allowing him to rejuvenate himself. (TV: Last of the Time Lords)

However, I have seen other sources saying that it was the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Reims, not of Paris.

As for another appearance by the Cathedral….

“THE FACTS OF LIFE GOES TO PARIS”

The girls and Mrs. Garrett head to Paris. The girls are going to spend some time in the French counterpart of their school while Mrs. Garrett attends a cooking school. The girls were hoping to spend some time in Paris but find themselves stuck in the countryside with a strict guardian. When they discover that their last week of school will be spent in Paris, they plan to sneak away and discover the city on their own. Jo decides to go to Le Mans and meets a French boy, Blair encounters a local of her own, while Natalie and Tootie run into an author that Natalie admires. Research into TV shows that might have had establishing shots of the Cathedral would take awhile and I expect to eventually include them in the Hall of Fame Gallery as I find them.  But here are some TV series in which I might expect to find such images:

This will be a growing list as I look into other options.  But we have enough to make the grade for now.

This is just my poor little attempt to remember the Cathedral of Notre Dame as it once was.

MY "FRIENDS" IN TOOBWORLD = TV'S FRANK (NOT THAT ONE)

Every so often I put the spotlight on my friends, or the reasonable facsimiles of those friends, and what their "televersions" might be up to in Toobworld.

Recently, the WFSB/Liberty Bank Surprise Squad went to a supermarket in Meriden, Connecticut, to surprise shoppers with gift cards to ease the cost of their shopping.  And one of those shoppers was a man named Frank Vumbaco.  (Click on his name there and you'll see the news report.)  He not only got his groceries paid for, but they also gave him a gift card to help in his volunteer work at the Church of the Resurrection.

Frank Vumbaco isn't a friend of mine; we've never met.  But his sister Georgeanne is a friend.  And she is truly Sister Georgeanne, once the principal of St. Joe's in my hometown.  And she's one very lucky nun because she didn't come to that parish until long after I could have been a threat to her sanity.  But I'll always be grateful to her for giving me the tour of a fabled place that was nothing more than myth, a legend - the third floor of St. Joseph's School.  (It had been sealed off for decades and we weren't even allowed on the stairwell which led to it.)

But I don't know her brother Frank.  Still, that doesn't stop the voices in my head from coming up with possible scenarios for his televersion, now that he officially exists in Toobworld.  (As far as I know - he could have appeared on television in the past; I’ll have to check with Sister Georgeanne about that….)

Let’s take a look at what we have to work with just from this special interest story on the WFSB3 evening news.  First off, and it may be O’Bvious, but this report locks him in as his League of Themselves member.  He is the TV Frank Vumbaco.  He lives in Wallingford, was shopping in Meriden… so it’s pozz’ble, just pozz’ble, that his televersion has interacted with fictional characters from TV shows which took place in Connecticut. 

So maybe he met, or had been friends with, the members of the Tate and Campbell families down near the New York border in Dunn’s River.  (‘Soap’)  Or maybe at one point he had to serve on a jury for a court case presided over by Judge Amy Gray.  (‘Judging Amy’)  Perhaps he watched the evening news from a New Haven TV station which employed a dragon puppet to help in the daily weather forecasts, never realizing that it was an actual fire-breathing dragon. (‘Scorch’)

And plenty of other shows created fictional Connecticut towns which TV’s Frank may have visited – Cedar Heights (‘Murder, She Wrote’), Westbourne (‘The Fugitive’), and Joyville from ‘The Hap Richards Show’ – I still have my certificate of citizenship!  (But then, I am a member of the Television Crossover Hall of Fame….)

Looking beyond the Nutmeg State….

As mentioned in the news story, Frank Vumbaco served in Vietnam.  That serves up a lot of TV characters with whom he could have interacted, either during or after the war.

Three TV shows stand out for being set in Nam (or at least for part of their series’ run):

• ‘China Beach’
• ‘Tour Of Duty’
• ‘Call To Glory’

Even ‘The Twilight Zone’ had two episodes set in Vietnam.

Sister Georgeanne later added more information in a comment:

He was in the Air Force. He served as a medic in the Philippines. 

So we don't have to think about his televersion being in Nam itself.  The Philippines is an interesting angle for finding Toobworld connections.  I decided to utilize the "world" in Toobworld and research a few possibilities to be found in actual shows from the Phillipines in the 1960s to the 1970s.
TV's Frank may have visited Wanbol University, to be found in the 1970s sitcom 'Iskul Bukol'.  Or he may have met members of the family who lived in the Magic Stone House ('Hiwaga sa Bahay na Bato' - the first Pinoy soap opera.)  Or he knew the Puruntóng family, headed by 'John en Marsha'.

I trust it was a safer environment than actually being "in country" at least.....

Luckily the True Frank and TV's Frank made it back to the United States.  And from them, a new subset of TV characters emerged - to be found in so many TV shows which had characters who had served in Vietnam:

I’m partial to those characters who were already veterans of the War and returned home.  Even though we don’t see every detail in any TV character’s life, the actual service details for fictional Nam vets is usually kept vague.  Having served in Vietnam was enough to know.  And so there are so many other fellow vets who might know Mr. Vumbaco.

These are all theoretical of course, and have no bearing on Frank Vumbaco’s actual life.  Hey – I’m not so far gone in managing my fictional realm to confuse both worlds.  (Not like those people who rant about some detail they see on TV which contradicts how it really is in the Trueniverse.  It’s not real, you nutjobs!)

But for a TV character, so much of their lives are never seen on TV.  They were in Toobworld from the moment they're born through their TV series and hopefully long after the shows are cancelled.  They just don’t freeze in place during the commercials!

So even though we never see it happen, those TV characters could have come into contact with characters from other TV shows.  And that’s what could have happened with TV’s Frank Vumbaco.

TVXOHOF, OCTOBER 2017 - GUIDO THROUGH THE YEARS

It has long been the tradition here at Toobworld Central for the October inductee into the Crossover Hall of Fame to be somehow connected with horror, or just be horrible in general.  Even when there were year-long themes, I found a way around that - like Frank Barone of 'Everybody Loves Raymond' and Kang the Klingon from 'Star Trek'.  And that was all due to the month being the home of Halloween.

But October is also the month in which we celebrate the heritage and contributions of Italian-Americans.  (If you feel it necessary to call it Columbus Day, feel free.  I just don't think he deserves to be honored in connection with the ethnic pride of Italian-Americans.)

So since I'm using this year to catch up with the memorial inductees into the Hall, I thought I might finally tackle a thorny problem with an Italianate connection - how to splain away Guido Panzini.

 

GUIDO PANZINI

From Wikipedia:

Pat Harrington became famous in the 1950s as a member of Steve Allen's television comedy troupe, the "Men on the Street" (which also included Don Knotts, Tom Poston and Louis Nye). He made many appearances as the comedic Italian immigrant "Guido Panzini" on 'The Jack Paar Show' in the mid-1950s.

In a 1965 episode of 'The Man from U.N.C.L.E.' ("The Bow-Wow Affair"), Harrington reprised his role as "Guido Panzini" (whom he also played in the February 8, 1966 episode of 'McHale's Navy' and in the May 2, 1983 episode of 'One Day at a Time'). 

So the appearances of Guido Panzini split right down the middle - six shows in total, three involving comedy sketches and the other three in which Guido got involved in Toobworld adventures.  So my easy splainin is that there are two Guido Panzinis - one in Skitlandia seen in the 1950s and the other one who lived in the main Toobworld.

However....

Although Guido appeared first in the main Toobworld in an episode of 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.', on the Toobworld timeline he showed up first involved with the crew of the PT 73 during World War II.  Twenty years later he was then seen dealing with the international spy agency.  And about two decades after that, he was a fashion designer who bore an uncanny resemblance to Duane Schneider, a building super.  

And yet he didn't seem to age significantly.  In fact twenty years after World War II, he looked younger than he did during the Big One.  (I'm thinking it was done with wigs, fake beards. and makeup.)

He also had a variety of jobs - he was a con man in Italy, an expert on dogs and a veterinarian to boot when Illya consulted with him, and as mentioned earlier, a fashion designer working with Ann Romano.

Although he was a confidence trickster during the war, I don't think he was just passing himself off with those other occupations.  I think he had live long enough to gain a degree in veterinary medicine and then decided to try his hand at fashion.

Here's what I'm thinking - Guido Panzini was an immortal.  And probably the Highlander kind.

This would splain away why Guido disappeared for long stretches of time.  It was a combination of taking the time to learn a new trade, and also he was hiding from the other Immortals who were seeking to cut off his head to gain his immortal energies.

Guido Panzini was never seen again in the main Toobworld.  And as Pat Harrington has passed away, I''m afraid it's not likely he ever will grace our screens again.  In fact, I'm afraid that it's pozz'ble, just pozz'ble that Guido Panzini's luck finally ran out with the other Immortals......

Now even though I said Panzini was not seen again in Toobworld, I should qualify that as meaning he was never seen again under that name.  Some of Harrington's other characters could have been Guido with an alias.  (I would not be surprised if he also knew how to drop that accent when necessary.)

But I'm not going to work through the list to find some likely candidates.  It would entail learning about those characters to see if they had back-stories which would disqualify them from consideration.

I will put forward this suggestion though - a theory of relateeveety.  I know the Immortals were supposed to be rendered sterile by their transformation from being normal humans, but what if that was just a mistakenly held myth?  What if they could procreate?

It would mean that a lot of characters in Toobworld who looked like Guido had inherited his strong telegenetics.  And Guido could have been dipping the Panzini Pencil into some willing inkwells - no, wait.  That metaphor doesn't work.  No matter.  I never metaphor I didn't like....

Anyhoo, Panzini was pretty free and easy with Li'l Guido throughout the ages, ever since he had been transformed.  So nothing says that characters played by Harrington who lived in the past - like NY Examiner columnist Mitch McCully couldn't share the same father as those who were seen in more contemporary shows like Thomas Kitzmiller, the Vice President of Public Relations for the Oceanic International Oil corporation.

But they didn't inherit his immortal lifespan.....

And as a theory of relateeveety, there's another reason the Guido Panzini deserves membership.  It might not actually be true, but who's to say so?
