O'BSERVATIONS - "ARACHNIDS IN THE UK"

EPISODE REVIEW #4

“ARACHNIDS IN THE UK”

By the time Russell T. Davies stepped down as the showrunner for ‘Doctor Who’, I was ready for a change in style.  Had I ever had the chance to meet him at that time, I would have thanked him for his service in bringing back the Doctor and making it so entertaining and thus popular.  But he really had piled it on, always trying to top himself until it threatened to get out of control.  (The Doctor was practically omniscient, a god!)  It was time for RTD to go and let the Grand Moff take over.

But absence makes the hearts grow fonder and while this wasn’t an episode in which he had any connection, its premise and execution reminded me of Davies’ showman style.  Thanks to the spiders but especially the performance of Chris Noth, a lot of the episode was over-the-top, and its science was daft.  (Giant spiders from carcasses?  I don’t care what you saturate those dead spiders with, you’re not going to get living ones. So these were Zombie Spiders!)

We had a good sense of Graham O’Brien’s private life and this episode brought home how bereft he was with his beloved Grace, Ryan Sinclair’s grandmother, now gone.  We at least know now how the actress was going to be considered a recurring character when Grace was killed off in the first episode.  Those scenes with Graham’s memory of her visualized were extremely powerful.  And as I look at everything on TV from a Toobworldly perspective, she really could have been there as a ghost.  It’s just that Grace wouldn’t want to scare her husband, letting him think he could really visualize his memories.

We also got to meet Yasmin’s family, father, mother (Natjia!) and self-centered sister.  I’m not sure we’ll get to see more of them as the season plays out, but that title “Demons of Punjab” looks promising for another visit by the Khans.

I’m not that familiar with TV characters of Pakistani heritage, so I don’t want to suggest any possible theories of relateeveety just yet.  However, ‘Doctor Who’ has had a tradition of meeting historical figures from the Real World.  And other TV shows have suggested familial relationships between their fictional characters and actual celebrities.  (This practice goes back to before television, at least to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who claimed that Sherlock Holmes was related to the painter Vernet.)

So here’s my suggestion: how about if the Khans of Sheffield are somehow related, even if distantly, to the Bulsaras of London?  There’s no denying that Farrokh Bulsara is a hot item in pop culture now – you know Farrokh, Freddie Mercury whose life and death are being remembered in the hit movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”.  Surely some creative writer out there could come up with a way for Team TARDIS to interact with Freddie and Queen, and Yaz and her family could be the linchpin on which the plot hangs.

I want to give a special focus to the character of Jack L. Robertson, the Ugly American billionaire played by Chris Noth.  First off, two easy theories of relateeveety – because Noth plays him, he could be identical cousins with Detective Mike Logan of the NYPD who was assigned to the 27th Precinct before being transferred to Staten Island.  (He may be retired by now I would think, based on the cops I knew back in Manhattan.)

As for that other theory of relateeveety?  John James Preston.  Who dat, you say?  “Mr. Big” from ‘Sex And The City’ and the love of Carrie Bradshaw’s televersion.  (I was under the assumption that Mr. Big died during the second movie, but I’m not sure now of that.)

As for them being identical cousins, which was first implemented in Toobworld with ‘The Patty Duke Show’, there are two definitions to that term.  The first type of identical cousin were represented by Kathy and Patty Lane – they have different parents, although their fathers are identical twins as well.  It’s just that the replication of DNA in Toobworld is very strong and happens frequently, even among total strangers who must have had a common ancestor who was the source of those particular chromosomes no matter how far back.

The other type of “identical cousin” used that term as code – those people who resemble each more than likely had fathers who had a roving eye and sired children with their mistresses.

Jack Robertson was an O’Bvious stand-in for Donald Trump and I congratulate the people behind the scenes for employing an old screenwriter trick with this kind of depiction.  To protect themselves from any accusations that they were savaging the actual person who inspired the character, that person is then mentioned as being a peer of the caricature.

GRAHAM:
He's running for President in 2020.
ROBERTSON:
I haven't declared my intentions yet.
But, look, we're talking about spiders!

GRAHAM:
See? Typical politician.
Avoiding the question.

ROBERTSON:
I am not a politician.
I'm a businessman
and I know how to run things.

JADE:
I've heard you're only running
cos you've hated Trump for decades.

ROBERTSON:
Please don't mention that name.

Brilliant in structure!  Not only does Robertson display the worst characteristics of Drumpf as the tyrannical but cowardly bully that he is, but they get in that extra snipe by making his own counterpart hate him too.

I don’t think we’ve seen the last of Jack L. Robertson in the series.  You know the character still plans to run for the presidency in 2020 over there in Toobworld, so he still might show up as we get closer to the election.  And perhaps some problem the Doctor is handling will derail his candidacy.

Hotels are just one facet of the JLR business empire.  I’m hoping from this point on, we’ll see those initials show up again on other enterprises.  And even better, I’d love to see other shows use it as well.  Not much Auntie Beeb could do about it, I should think, so long as they don’t actually state that “JLR” stands for Jack L. Robertson.  (And in a perfect Toobworld they would never say definitely what it meant.)

As with Tricey the Triceratops, the show got us - well, me at least - emotionally involved with the death of a CGI creature when Robertson shot the gigantic spider queen while she was already dying from suffocation.  I can't blame the spiders - they were only doing what came naturally and it wasn't their fault that they were expanded to that size.  Couldn't some of them have survived and perhaps one day find a way to thrive?   There was at the very least the one back at the flat of Khans' neighbors and one in Graham's home.  Maybe we'll see them again...

Not much else to add, I guess….

Allonsy!

MISSING LINKS - "COLUMBO" & "DIE HARD"

I've been writing posts for Inner Toob since August 2004.  This is the 11,354th one.  Every so often one of my posts resurface in my Google searches and I don't even recognize them; it's been that long and there have been that many!

One of my FB friends (and one who shares my birthday), Steve Skayman, is also a big fan of 'Columbo'; we're members of an English-based 'Columbo' page on Facebook.  And for Christmas he shared a couple of frame grabs from the episode "Uneasy Lies The Crown" in which a building could be seen in the background.  It's the same building that was identified as Nakatomi Plaza in the movie "Die Hard";

Turns out I wrote about this high-propane action film movie twice over the years, in connection to the TV series 'The Middleman', and 'Chuck'.

For more on those posts, click here and here.

In Toobworld, "Die Hard" is a movie, but it was based on an actual event which took place in Toobworld before 1987.  (The movie, as it did in the Real World, came out in 1988, thirty years ago.)

For most of the points I made in those two articles, I still stand by them.  Al Powell of the actual event was the cousin of Big Mike of BuyMore.  In the movie he was played by an incredible lookAlike named Reginald VelJohnson, whose televersion was established in the 'Brooklyn Nine-Nine' episode "Bachelorette Party" when Detective Jake Peralta got to meet the actor and discuss the movie with him.

One thing I would change would be that scene in 'The Middleman" which provides the caption "Vandelay Industries" to a shot of Nakotomi Plaza.

That caption has no bearing on any Toobworldling unless they are tele-cognizant.  That is still Nakatomi Plaze, but Vandelay Industries are to be found within the tower.

Thanks again, Steve for the 'Columbo' connection to "Die Hard"!

A TVXOHOF TRIBUTE - ROBERT OSBORNE

From the LA Times:
Robert Osborne, who displayed an encyclopedic knowledge — and love — of film history as the primary host of Turner Classic Movies, died Monday morning at age 84, said his partner of 20 years, theater director and producer David Staller.

Osborne died of natural causes in his sleep at home in New York City, Staller said.

"It's difficult to imagine a planet without him," Staller said. "He made the choice to call it a day, and he wants everyone to know that he'll see them at the after party."

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Osborne; he was a welcoming guide as he ushered me into the world of some movie which I wasn't so sure I wanted to see in the first place.  And he usually proved right.

But I thought that just being THE host for Turner Classic Movies and a guest on a few talk shows wasn't going to make him eligible for the TVXOHOF.  And had that been all there was, so it goes.

Knowing that he had once been an actor, I figured I should at least look through his page at the IMDb and see if there was anything for me to work with.  And his affable personality and identification with an entire network proved to make him a great addition to a couple of shows in which he got to lampoon his fictional televersion.

It all began back in 1959....

Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse- The Desilu Revue (1959)
... Himself (as Bob Osborne)

Lucille Ball plays herself as the vice-president of Desilu Productions, who is busy readying her workshop of young performers for their musical revue.

I've only found one video clip from this archaic special, featuring a song and dance routine by Carole Cook and another member of the company.  If he's in the background of this number, I couldn't tell ya.......

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law
- Turner Classic Birdman
 (2005)

Turner Classic Movies' Robert Osborne introduces a recently "discovered" episode of the "classic" "Birdman" series. In this very special Birdman, a pre-law school Harvey encounters a number of his future courtroom adversaries who try to kill him.
- Anonymous

Even though this was from the Cartoon Network, Mr. Osborne's feet are firmly planted on Tele-Terra Firma......

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
- Kimmy's in a Love Triangle!
 (2015)

"Daddy's Boy" is a rightly-maligned movie from the forties that got a few mentions in this series and at the end of this particular episode we got to see why it was so hated.  And Mr. Osborne is there to put it all in perspective.

Robert Osborne even showed up a few times in Skitlandia, but as per the usual dictates of that TV dimension, he was played by somebody else.

From the 'Saturday Night Live' Wiki:

Although he has never been on 'Saturday Night Live', he has been impersonated by Darrell Hammond on April 15, 2006 during the "Movie Archives" sketch and most recently by Jason Sudeikis five times, which all were during the "The Essentials" sketch.

Good night and may God bless, Mr. Osborne.  Thank you for bringing the Cineverse into Toobworld......

LINKIN' HAZE - THE ARK OF THE COVENANT

FLYNN CARSEN:
That is an exact replica of the Ark of the Covenant.

JUDSON:
It's not a replica.
Don't touch it or you'll be electrocuted.
Or as they used to say, "smote down. "

FLYNN:
Am I on TV?
Is this one of those hidden-camera shows?

JUDSON:
Trust me, Flynn, this...
This is your destiny.

"THE LIBRARIAN: QUEST FOR THE SPEAR"

From the wikia for 'The Librarians':
  • The Ark of the Covenant is an artifact in The Library.
  • The  Ark of the Covenant is cited in ancient Hebrew texts as a symbol of mankind's allegiance with God. It has appeared many times in popular culture (e.g "Raiders of the Lost Ark"), usually, having supernatural powers. It is thought to be in Axum, Ethiopia , a city with huge historical value.
  • As it was never seen [in action] on the series, its powers are unknown.
And speaking of "Raiders"......

There have been four movies in the movie universe about Professor Henry "Indiana" Jones, archaeologist and adventurer.  And in between them there was a TV series about Jones as a boy and as a young man, and there was a TV movie which showcased Harrison Ford to one of the roles that will grant him cinema immortality.

Because of the TV show and movie, Toobworld Central has grabbed copies of the Indiana Jones movie franchise and absorbed them into the TV Universe.

So the Ark of the Covenant was grabbed by Indy in the 1940s in the TV Universe as well.

But where was it stored?

Eventually it ended up in the Library as noted in that scene above.  But before that it must have been snagged, bagged, and tagged for 'Warehouse 13'.  Since all of the Indiana Jones saga should be considered part of Toobworld, then it makes sense that the Ark would be stored by the US Government in the Warehouse while Warehouse 13 was under "control" of the United States.

But the shadowy operatives who really govern in "Telemerica" knew eventually the Warehouse would relocate to another country.  And they couldn't let its incredible power potentially fall into the hands of one of America's enemies.

Whether the Ark was transferred willingly to the Metropolitan Library or the Librarian and Guardian who served prior to Edward Wilde took it upon themselves to "liberate" it, but it now resides in the Library.

We'll just have to wait and see if any other TV show tries to access the Ark for its own purposes.....

THE TELEVISION CROSSOVER HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2016

2016 has been cruel and unmerciful this year, to me personally (although it was my fault), as well as to the famous people we've lost since last January.  I would not put it past 2016 to find a way to screw over this pronouncement of the 2016 Class for the Television Crossover Hall of Fame as we've still got several hours to go.....

But to hell with you, 2016.  I'm sharing the new members now.

There was no problem with the planned inductions for the year.  The overall theme was going to be the League of Themselves in which people played their fictional televersions in three or more different TV shows.  And there were enough candidates to cover the traditional themes for individual months - January/Classic TV, February/Black History, May/May Queens, etc.

It was the Memorial/Tribute section that became more depressing as Prime-Time marched on.  There were some planned tributes to members of the League of Themselves who were still alive - Jerry Lewis, Kirk Douglas, Tony Bennett.  And two who had already passed away, but who would be noted for the 100th anniversary of their own births - Jackie Gleason & Dinah Shore.

I just never expected that so many celebrities with well-represented televersions would be passing away this year, almost to the very end.  (There I go, tempting Fate again.)  Fourteen out of the twenty tributes died in 2016.

Here is the class of 2016:

REGULARLY SCHEDULED:

JAN - Danny Thomas
FEB - B.B. King
MAR - Art Linkletter
APR - Jack Carter
MAY - Raquel Welch
JUNE - Ryan & Trista Rehn Sutter
B'DAY HONORS  - Conan O’Brien (Tooniverse)
JULY - Mickey Mantle
AUG - John Hart
SEPT - Sheldon Leonard
OCT - Wes Craven
NOV - Michelle Obama
DEC - Dean Martin
XMAS HONORS - Queen Elizabeth II

THE TRIBUTES:

David Bowie
Jackie Gleason (100th anniversary of birth)
Dinah Shore
(100th anniversary of birth)
Jerry Lewis (turned 90)
Frank Sinatra Jr. (Tooniverse & Live Action)
Willie Mays (turned 85)

Dick Cavett (turned 80)
Florence Henderson
Grant Tinker
Senator John Glenn
Kirk Douglas (turned 100!)

Debbie Reynolds

Let's hope we don't have so many new members next year.....

TVXOHOF BIRTHDAY: DICK CAVETT

Talk show raconteur Dick Cavett turned 80 years old yesterday.

From Wikipedia:
Richard Alva "Dick" Cavett (born November 19, 1936) is an American television personality and former talk show host notable for his conversational style and in-depth discussions. Cavett appeared regularly on nationally broadcast television in the United States in five consecutive decades, the 1960s through the 2000s.

And since this is the year in which all of the inductees into the Television Crossover Hall of Fame are members of the League of Themselves, I figured this was a good enough reason as any for him to join the club, no matter what his friend Groucho thought of the practice.

From the IMDb:

"The Dick Cavett Show" aired on 5 networks for over 35 years: ABC daytime (March 4, 1968-January 24, 1969) (originally titled This Morning) ABC prime time (May 26-September 19, 1969) ABC late night (December 29, 1969-January 1, 1975) CBS prime time (August 16-September 6, 1975) PBS (October 10, 1977-October 8, 1982) USA prime time (September 30, 1985-September 23, 1986) ABC late night (September 23-December 30, 1986) CNBC (April 17, 1989-January 26, 1996).

Most of all, Cavett is known for hosting several talk shows, after starting out as a writer for late night hosts Jack Paar and Johnny Carson.

With his own shows, Cavett had such guests as John and Yoko, Bobby Fischer, Katherine Hepburn, Janis Joplin, Brando, Norman Mailer vs. Gore Vidal, and the aforementioned Mr. Marx.  Just a day after Woodstock ended, he hosted Joni Mitchell, Plus there was the time one of his guests, a health and fitness expert, died during the taping of an episode.

Cavett moderated a discussion/debate about the Vietnam War with John Kerry as one of his guests, which landed him on Nixon's enemy list.

http://youtu.be/PxwXBS8AM6M

He made enough of an impression that he made quite a few appearances in various Toobworld dimensions as himself:

The Phil Silvers Show
- Bilko's Godson (1959) ... Student in Front Row

O'BSERVATION:
Technically, his character is never actually identified as himself, but since no other name was given... Why not?  So in Toobworld, Cavett's televersion took the Stanford entry exam before choosing Yale.

Nightside (1973 TV Movie)

The Odd Couple
- Two Men on a Hoarse (1975)

All My Children
- Episode dated 9 October 1979

https://youtu.be/41Hpl-ozJys

 Cheers
- They Called Me Mayday (1983)

Hotel
- Outsiders (1984)

Amazing Stories
- Mirror, Mirror (1986)

Kate & Allie
- High Anxiety (1986)

True Blue
- Blue Monday (1990)

Barbarians at the Gate (1993 TV Movie)

The Simpsons (voice)
- Homie the Clown (1995)

Bored to Death
- The Black Clock of Time (2011)

Gossip Girl
- Con-Heir (2012)

Hellman v. McCarthy (2014 TV Movie)

Children's Hospital
- Show Me a Hero (2016)

Happy birthday, Sir!
