(Or vice versa)If they had a son, they could have Christened the boy with her family name and thus the grandfather of Hamilton Nash would have been first cousin to Nash Crawford, legendary Texas Ranger.

Maybe Great-Grandpa Nash's sister married one of the Crawford brothers. Nash's father moved west to Texas, but his brother moved West to the Dakotas, where his daughter Samantha was orphaned in an Indian raid about ten years before she first met the Maverick brothers.
