The sinking of the Titanic has been a fascination for the television medium since perhaps the medium began. (Definitely since before I was born - in May of 1955, 'You Are There' visited that fateful day in 1912.)

As we are seeing now with the collapse of the World Trade Center, fictional characters took their place among the real people in many different depictions of the Titanic's sinking. Here is a list of just some of them:

'SUPERNATURAL'

A new timeline was created when Balthazar changed history by preventing the ship from sinking. Fate then stepped in, killing everyone who should have died on that voyage.

'DOCTOR WHO'

The Ninth Incarnation of the Doctor (although his Fourth Incarnation denied it.)

The sinking of the RMS Titanic occurred on the night of 14 April through to the morning of 15 April 1912 in the north Atlantic Ocean, four days into her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. The largest passenger liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at 23:40 (ship's time) on Sunday, 14 April 1912. She sank two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April, causing the deaths of over 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history.

Titanic had received several warnings of sea ice during 14 April but was travelling near her maximum speed when she collided with the iceberg. The ship suffered a glancing blow that buckled her starboard (right) side and opened five of her sixteen compartments to the sea. Titanic had been designed to stay afloat with four flooded compartments but not five, and the crew soon realised that the ship was going to sink. They used rocket flares and radio ("wireless") messages to attract help as the passengers were put into lifeboats. However, there were far too few lifeboats available and many were not filled to their capacity due to a poorly managed evacuation.

The ship broke up as she sank with over a thousand passengers and crew members still aboard. Almost all those who jumped or fell into the water died from hypothermia within minutes. RMS Carpathia arrived on the scene about an hour and a half after the sinking and had rescued the last of the survivors in the lifeboats by 09:15 on 15 April, little more than 24 hours after Titanic's crew had received their first warnings of drifting ice. The disaster caused widespread public outrage over the lack of lifeboats, lax shipping regulations, and the unequal treatment of the different passenger classes aboard the ship. Enquiries set up in the wake of the disaster recommended sweeping changes to maritime regulations. This led in 1914 to the establishment of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which still governs maritime safety today.

The Titanic is one of the members of the "Proto-Hall", the fore-runner to the TV Crossover Hall Of Fame......

Hodor is a recurring character in Game of Thrones. He is played by guest star Kristian Nair n and débuts in the first episode of the first season, though he does not speak until the fourth episode. Hodor is a simple servant of House Stark and aids Bran Stark's mobility after he sustains a paralyzing injury.

Hodor is a stableboy serving at Winterfell. He is large and slow of wits, but is gentle and loyal to the Stark family. He is only capable of saying one word, "Hodor".

Now, I had said earlier in this ASOTV run that I would refrain from using any info from the "Wiki Of Ice And Fire" which is based on the books so as not to give away future plot points. (Mostly to protect myself.)

But I'm including this because it helps flesh out the character while not revealing any spoilers......

In the "Song of Ice and Fire" novels, Hodor is a the great-grandson of Old Nan, the oldest woman in the castle. Hodor's real name is Walder, but he is only capable of speaking the word, "Hodor," and has become named for it. The meaning of the word is unknown.

It's only a theoretical assumption on my part that Westeros can be found on the Earth's twin planet Mondas.  And building from that, Mondas is the planet from which Eve Norta and her fellow refugees escaped, landing on Earth (as seen in "Probe 7 - Over And Out" of 'The Twilight Zone'.)  So certain Earthlings have Mondasian blood in them, which would splain why there are Toobworld citizens who look like characters from 'Game Of Thrones' - Sarah Conner, John Amsterdam, Bill Miller, Governor Tommy Carcetti, Dr. Arthur Ramsey, and Richard Sharpe.

But I don't think any Toobworldlings are descended from Hodor - even if he does look like Father Murphy.....

THEME OF THRONES

It's O'Bvious that 'Game Of Thrones' has a winner when it comes to the theme music. I find there's always some dust in the room whenever I see those opening credits, so that I get this lump in my throat.

How can I tell that the theme music is just as popular as the rest of the show? Check out these YouTube videos.

VAUGHAN-VILLE

I've written about Peter Vaughan, the actor featured in our ASOTV showcase for today, in the past - he played Horace Dorrington, one of 'The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes'.

He first came to my notice back in the 1980's when he played the Ogre in 'Time Bandits'. Mostly because he was treated in the credits as being as big a star as the others in the cast, and yet I never heard of him. (If I never heard of it, it doesn't exist!)

"Time Bandits" is one of those movies I'd like to abduct from the Cineverse and bring over the border into Toobworld.  There should have been a kids' TV show based on that movie!

Here's a look at one of his other roles in the Cineverse, as Anthony Hopkins' father in "Remains Of The Day":

Aemon is a recurring character in Game of Thrones. He is played by guest star Peter Vaughan and débuts in the third episode of the first season.

Aemon is the maester at Castle Black and is one of Lord Commander Jeor Mormont's closest advisers in the Night's Watch. He was once a member of House Targaryen before he joined the order of maesters and dropped his house name, but this has been long forgotten by most. He has served as the Maester at Castle Black for decades.

Old Nan is a recurring character in 'Game of Thrones'. She was played by Margaret John and débuts in the third episode of the first season. Margaret John passed away on 2 February 2011, after the completion of filming for the first season. According to the writers the character passed away between the first and second season.

Old Nan is an elderly storyteller at Winterfell. She is a retired servant of House Stark known for her tale-telling abilities. She has entertained the children of Eddard and Catelyn with stories throughout their childhoods. Her great grandson Hodor is a stable hand at the castle.

If 'Game Of Thrones' followed the books to the letter, Old Nan would have been around for a while longer. Sadly, Margaret John passed away soon after completing her scenes for the first season. It looks like Osha will be picking up the slack in her absence.
