Today is the birthday for the oldest of my siblings (but still younger than me.)

Bill has hiked the Appalachian Trail twice and is very involved in the activities of ALDHA, the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association. So in order to salute him on his natal anniversary, I wanted to showcase somebody from the League of Themselves who was always identified with the Great Outdoors.

I think I found the perfect candidate........

EUELL GIBBONS

From Wikipedia:

Euell Theophilus Gibbons (September 14, 1911 – December 29, 1975) was an outdoorsman and proponent of natural diets during the 1960s.

He was born in Clarksville, Texas, on September 14, 1911, and spent much of his youth in the hilly terrain of New Mexico during the dust bowl era. His mother taught him about foods available in the wild. As an adult he spent time in several states working a variety of jobs.

Throughout his travels his interest in wild foods continued and he experimented with new recipes and consulted experts.

Capitalizing on the growing return-to-nature movement in 1962, his first book, "Stalking the Wild Asparagus", became an instant success.

Gibbons then produced the cookbooks "Stalking the Blue-Eyed Scallop" in 1964 and "Stalking the Healthful Herbs" in 1966. He was widely published in various magazines, including two pieces which appeared in National Geographic Magazine. The first article, in the July 1972 issue, described a two-week stay on an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine where Gibbons along with his wife Freda and a few family friends relied solely on the island's resources for sustenance. The second article, which appeared in the August 1973 issue, features Gibbons, along with granddaughter Colleen and grandson Mike, stalking wild foods in four western states.

Often mistaken for a survivalist, Gibbons was simply an advocate of nutritious but neglected plants. He typically prepared these not in the wild, but in the kitchen with abundant use of spices, butter and garnishes.

Gibbons's publishing success brought him fame. He made guest appearances on 'The Tonight Show' and 'The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour'. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Susquehanna University.

A 1974 television commercial for Post Grape-Nuts cereal featured Gibbons asking viewers "Ever eat a pine tree? Many parts are edible." While he recommended eating Grape Nuts over eating pine trees (Grape Nuts' taste "reminds me of wild hickory nuts"), the quote caught the public's imagination and fueled his celebrity status.

Johnny Carson joked about sending Gibbons a "lumber-gram", and Gibbons himself joined in the humor; when presented with a wooden award plaque by Sonny and Cher, he good-naturedly took a bite out of it. (The "plaque" was actually an edible prop.)

My brother is also a member of the League of Themselves.  Like me and our brother Tim (plus seven of our cousins), he appeared on an episode of 'The Ranger Andy Show' back in the 1960's.  It was an afternoon kids' show broadcast locally in Connecticut.  And he read one of the epistles during a telecast of the Mass, also broadcast locally in Connecticut.

WELL, BLOW ME DOWN!

Every Sunday in the middle of the night, Me-TV shows an archaic episode of 'Mr. Lucky' which starred John Vivyan as the eponymous gambler and the great Ross Martin as his sidekick Andamo. (On a recurring basis, Pippa Scott plays Lucky's girlfriend Maggie.)

This week, the episode was "Maggie The Witness", in which Maggie was the sole witness to a gangland slaying in a tea room.

I have the episode embedded here for you to watch. The reason I think you should see it? If you're visiting this site, then you're familiar with the concept of TV crossovers. And this episode has a doozy - the visiting character isn't from another TV show... technically. But he has been seen in his own show in the Tooniverse, in the world of comic strips, in the Cineverse, and thanks to Terry Austin's obsession with him, in plenty of comic books.

This character may have shown up in Skitlandia, but I can't speak to that. However, I think this may be his first and only appearance in Earth Prime-Time.......

Hopefully you saw the credits at the end which gives credence to the idea that Jamie Forster was playing a flesh-and-blood Popeye decades before Robin Williams.

When he first meets with Mr. Lucky, Lucky addresses him as "Pops". That seems like a legitimate nickname which he would have acquired as he reached a ripe old age. In the comic strip world and in the Tooniverse, Popeye would be ageless. However, Time marches on in Earth Prime-Time and Popeye would have aged just like the rest of us. So the name of "Popeye" was reduced to "Pops".

For me, this has been an exciting find in the exciting world of Applied Crossoverology!

Reeva Rebecca Steenkamp (19 August 1983 – 14 February 2013) was a South African model. On 14 February 2013, she was shot dead by Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius, whom she had been dating since November 2012.

Steenkamp once worked as the live roaming presenter for FashionTV in South Africa.

She starred in television advertisements for a range of products, including Toyota Land Cruiser, Clover "The One", Redds and Aldor Pin Pop.

She featured as a celebrity contestant on the BBC Lifestyle show 'Baking Made Easy' in 2012.

At the time of her death, Steenkamp was signed up to appear on season five of the reality TV programme 'Tropika Island of Treasure' and had filmed the series episodes on location in Jamaica. The screening of the series began airing as scheduled on 16 February 2013, two days after her death. The first episode of the series was dedicated to Steenkamp and was preceded by a video tribute to her.

Steenkamp had been dating Oscar Pistorius, a South African Olympic and Paralympic runner, since November 2012. On 14 February 2013, Steenkamp was shot and killed at the home of her boyfriend Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius was arrested and charged with her murder.

O'BSERVATIONS:

Although reality competition shows like this are considered part of Toobworld, we usually ignore them unless the participants or the show itself is worked into the plotline of a scripted series.  Best example - 'Big Brother' in an episode of 'Yes, Dear'.

But because of the notoriety of this case, it is sure to be referenced for years to come, mostly in crime dramas I would assume.  (But then again, all these years later, TV characters do use OJ Simpson as the punchline in their dialogue in sitcoms.)  I would not be surprised if Ms. Steenkamp's murder is at least referenced, if not ripped off from the headlines and twisted for some South African version of 'Law & Order'.

I would not be surprised if this tragic story eventually becomes fodder for a TV movie.  The televersion of Reeva could always find a home in some alternate TV dimension, but I think her League of Themselves membership entitles her to remain as herself in the main Toobworld.

TWIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES - O.J. ON TRIAL

FOX has announced plans to recreate the "Case Of The Century" in a docu-drama TV movie. (For those of you with really horrible memories, the title refers to the courtroom drama that played out on our TV screens when OJ Simpson was tried for the murders of his ex-wife and her friend.)

In a dramatized form, the story was already told in 'American Tragedy' and was dramatized in several "reality" crime shows. And the story of OJ Simpson was told in a dashed-off movie just after the murders which ended with the football legend's arrest.

But none of those belong in the main Toobworld. Since the trial played out across the country on our TV screens, and OJ Simpson had played himself in so many TV presentations - including as host of 'Saturday Night Live' and in an episode of 'Here's Lucy' - then it's the actual Juice who can be found in the main Toobworld.

Not that we really want him there.....

TWIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES: "SHOGUN"

FOX has announced that they will be remaking James Clavell's book "Shogun" for television.

This will O'Bviously have to go into some alternate dimension as there can be only one "Shogun" for the main Toobworld. That would be the 1980 mini-series which starred Richard Chamberlain, Toshiro Mifune, and basically introduced John Rhys-Davies to the American audience.

Considering that it will be produced for FOX, I'm tempted to put this new version into the Evil Toobworld dimension.....

MISSING LINKS: DIRECTOR'S CUT

If TV characters were tele-cognizant, they might realize that they usually just appear in Toobworld fully-formed and with no backstory actually lived out. They may talk about their earlier lives, their childhoods, their college years, but the Trueniverse audience doesn't get to see that played out on their TV screens..... Unless they go hunting for it in other TV shows.

All part of the job here at Toobworld Central!

Pete Hornberger was the director of the TV variety show on NBC which was originally known as 'The Girlie Show', but which became 'TGS with Tracy Jordan' when the comedian joined the cast. Over time, we learned more about Pete (aka Peter Horn), met his wife, learned about his life as a member of the band Loverboy, etc. 

 But '30 Rock' was not the first time we ever saw Scott Adsit play the role.

In the 'Friends' episode "The One with Ross and Monica's Cousin", Pete was the director of a movie about Catholic immigrants from Naples and Joey Tribbiani auditioned for a role.

Unfortunately for him, the part required full frontal nudity... and that he be uncircumsized. Monica tried to help him out by fashioning a "hoodie" made from luncheon meat, but it fell off at a key moment.....

Scott Adsit played the role, which was listed only as "The Director". Since he would later go on to play Pete Hornberger in '30 Rock', why can't both directors be the same man?

TWO FOR TUESDAY: "PERFECT STRANGERS"

Two of my crossover companeros from the Facebook forums have turned their attention to 'Perfect Strangers' lately.....

For Toobworld Central, this was a perfectly acceptable crossover. For those who think they can hear a difference between the voice-over from 'Perfect Strangers' and the voice of Josh Taylor, who played Michael Hogan in the three incarnations of the sitcom that began as 'Valerie', that can be splained away.

First off, the difference could be caused by the equipment, which could have distorted his voice over the intercom. And secondly, he could have had a cold.....

Since 'Perfect Strangers' and 'The Hogan Family' were at the same point on the Toobworld timeline, then Captain Michael Hogan was already a widower.

Just saw 'Perfect Strangers' episode "Games People Play" where Balki and Larry are on a game show 'Risk It All'. When the 'Risk it All' commode cab (a toilet on wheels) is introduced, the game show hot explains it’s an American Imperial Whisper Flush supplied by Cunningham Hardware of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Crossover then with 'Happy Days'.

So it may seem odd that a hardware store in Milwaukee would be a sponsor for a game show taped in Chicago. But 'Risk It All' could have a national viewership, or at the very least it could be pulling in strong numbers in that general region. And so it would be considered a wise investment by the current owner of Cunningham's Hardware.

And who could that be?

Thirty years on from when 'Happy Days' began, Howard Cunningham may have passed away. But at the very least he should have been retired by that point in the 1980s. Besides, he strikes me as being a bit too cheap to lay out for the product placement.

And it can't be Chuck Cunningham. He disappeared from the show in more ways than just a casting cutback. Once he was gone, there was an episode in which Howard gave thanks to the Lord for his two wonderful children - and he was O'Bviously only referring to Richie and Joanie.

(It's always been the position of the Toobworld Dynamic that crazy-eyed Joanie killed her older brother and successfully got rid of the body. Then she made it look like he ran off with their father's earnings from the store, thus earning Howard's ire. And so he was disowned... all the while his remains were buried under Marion's flower beds.)

Why did she do it?  I think it was due to Chuck constantly dribbling that basketball under her window.  It was like the Chinese water torture and it drove her mad.  MAD, I tells you!

Since I think it unlikely we'll ever see Joanie Cunningham Arcola in Earth Prime-Time again, despite getting her own spin-off, I doubt we'll have to consider her as the source for the Whisper-Flush toilet-mobile. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if her murderous crime of fratricide wasn't finally uncovered (perhaps in a very Hitchcockian twist) and she's now spending the rest of her life in a very secure home for the criminally insane.  (Always remember what Barney Stinson warned about the "crazy-eyes".)

Where was I?  Oh yeah - who's running the store?

So that leaves Richie Cunningham to run the hardware store. Viewers might have expected better things for Richie's future than to be stuck running his dad's hardware store, but Life isn't always fair, not even to the main characters in popular sitcoms.

And by this point in time, Richie Cunningham, Jr., son of Richie and Lori Beth, would probably be running the store himself.

SYNOPSES:

NBC executive Jack Donaghy found out that his girl-friend Zarina was just like him - both of them had lovers on the side who fulfilled different needs that they weren't getting from each other. He discovered this while he was out on a date with his "sex idiot" Mindy, and he ran into Zarina who was out on a date with her sex idiot, Ryan Lochte.*

While Zarina and Jack argued about the situation (during which Jack realized that he served as the "Daddy figure" for Zarina), Ryan and Mindy gave in to their natural lust for each other, attracted as they were to such similar types.

A week later, Lochte was at a resort in California which offered various outlets for physical training, including a rope course. After completing the course, Ryan ran into a couple named Naomi and Max and he advised them that they should give the rope course a try.

"I would love to race Phelps on that thing," he said. (He was referring to Olympic team-mate and rival, Michael Phelps.)

Naomi noticed that Lochte had a girlfriend with him and said, "I thought your Mom sad you didn't have time for a girlfriend."

To which the sex idiot replied, "I don't, but does she look unhappy?"

It's probably just a matter of semantics, but he sounded more like a jerk than an idiot there.

SIX ADULT MOVIES FOUND IN TOOBWORLD

1] "Buffay The Vampire Layer" from 'Friends'

Phoebe and Ursula Buffay are twin sisters. Ursula was the first seen in recurring role on 'Mad About You' as the waitress who often served Paul and Jamie Buchman. Later, we were introduced to Phoebe as one of the 'Friends' who often gathered at the Central Perk coffee house.

Both were flighty, but Ursula exuded an indifference to others that bordered on cruelty. A good example was her career in adult movies - not wanting to use her own name, she simply borrowed that of her twin sister instead... which led to a lot of mistaken identity problems....

2] "The Porn Identity" from 'The O.C.'

"The Porn Identity" may not seem that exiting a title for an adult flick - it's just a play on words based on the book and movie franchise which was based on the "real" Jason Bourne (played by Richard Chamberlain in Toobworld.)

But imagine you are Marissa Cooper and you find out that your own mother, Julie Cooper, was the star of that movie? Awkward!

3] "Vaginatown" from 'Californication'

A porn actress named Daisy found out that Charlie Runkle was responsible for her getting black-balled in the business, so she forced him to get her a part in a movie that would be entitled "Vaginatown". I can only hope that the final line in the movie was: "Forget it, Jake. It's Vaginatown."

4] "Too Big To Nail" from 'Parks & Recreation'

This is the movie that inspired this Super Six list! It starred Brandi Maxxx as a fictionalized Leslie Knope and was loosely based on Pawnee's plan to subsidize a failing video rental store.

That other character in the movie was called Don Swanson, the parody of Ron Swanson.  However, I would have named him Ron Schwanstucker.  Nobody watches porn movies for the names anyway.....

5] "Welcome To The Sex Plane" from 'How I Met Your Mother'

Architect Ted Mosby found out that a porn actor was using his name which led to a lot of ribbing from his friends. Ted tracked down his counterpart and learned that he was a guy he knew back in grade school who believed that it was Ted who rescued him from bullies. Taking the name "Ted Mosby" as his acting name was his idea of a tribute.

Barney Stinson was impressed to meet him, though.....

6] Joey Tribbiani's porn movie from 'Friends'

Apparently the original script had the title of Joey's film as "How To Suck Seed In Business", but Standards & Practices stepped in. Succeeding (oops) suggestions probably were even worse, so eventually it was left untitled.

But we can make a theoretical crossover with another 90's sitcom to give Joey's movie a title!

Margaret Cho had her own sitcom for one season called 'All-American Girl' about her character's Korean-American family. They ran a bookstore which had an adult video section in the store.......

From my Little Buddy Sean:

Her parents had a video store, one of the videos was "Free Your Willy"

"You know that's pornography?! 'Free Your Willy'. Heh heh. It's gooooooooood!"

A few other titles were mentioned in the episode - "In & Out Of Africa", "The Booberly Hillbillies", and as seen in this picture, "Lips Without Pity" (which was supposedly about student nurses.)

Of them all, it was "Free Your Willy" that garnered a second mention as seen with the quote provided by Sean. So that's why I'm choosing that one as the title of Joey's porn movie.

By the way, Joey remained clothed in that movie. It could be that the producers wanted to use him, but the fact that he was circumsized (which came up in a later episode of 'Friends') may have turned them off from using him for the actual sex scenes.

And that's the perfect image for dropping the subject.....

SYNOPSIS:

In early 2005, Smith appeared in three episodes of the Canadian-made 'Degrassi: The Next Generation' television show. In the episodes, Smith, portraying a fictionalized version of himself, visited the school to work on the film "Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh!". Smith wrote all his dialogue for the shows he appeared in.

All three episodes were collected on a DVD entitled "Jay and Silent Bob Do Degrassi". In the course of filming the film, Smith fell in love with local celebrity, Caitlin, and broke-up her long-term relationship with Joey Jeremiah.

Smith and Mewes also appeared in 2 more episodes the following season, when they returned to Degrassi for the Toronto premiere of the fictional "Jay and Silent Bob Go Canadian, Eh!" movie.Then, Smith appeared in the TV movie "Degrassi Goes Hollywood" a few years later, once again portraying a version of himself.

In addition to appearing on 'Degrassi: The Next Generation', Kevin Smith is an avid fan of the original 'Degrassi' series, 'Degrassi Junior High' and 'Degrassi High' and references to the original are present in some of his early films.

A NOSE FOR BLIPVERTS

It's time to pay the bills......

Puppets in Toobworld are alive when they are seen interacting with humans independently of manipulators. The background splainin is that they are the Spirit People of the Isle of the Blessed* which has since become known as the Living Island. When a Spirit occupies a puppet shell to give itself shape, it assumes the characteristics of that form.

For all intents and purposes, Kermit is a frog, Kukla is a dragon, Chairy is a chair.

And the same holds true for puppets who look like established celebrities. They may know they are not the real thing, but still they continue the illusion by acting like the celebrity they resemble.

In this case, the puppet would always act as if it was the real Jimmy Durante.....

* The Isle of the Blessed can be found in the 2nd Century tome "True History" by Lucian of Samosota.  The inhabitants of the island are invisible and so they wear spider webs dyed purple to give them shape.

Yesterday we were one week away from a new episode of 'Doctor Who'. And today we're just seven days away from the premiere of the third season for 'Game of Thrones'!

Just because it was never broadcast, that doesn't mean it didn't happen in Toobworld.  It now has a home online in YouTube and online TV is part and parcel of the Toobworld Dynamic.

Stephen Joseph Cannell (February 5, 1941 – September 30, 2010) was an American television producer, writer, novelist and occasional actor, and the founder of Stephen J. Cannell Productions.

After college, Cannell spent four years working with the family business before selling his first script to the Universal series 'It Takes a Thief' in 1968. He was quickly hired by the television production branch of Universal Studios and was soon freelance writing for such other crime shows as 'Ironside' and 'Columbo'. Not long afterward, he received his first full-time gig as the story editor of Jack Webb's police series 'Adam-12', then in its fourth season (1971–1972).

Cannell created or co-created nearly 40 television series, mostly crime dramas, including 'The Rockford Files', 'The Greatest American Hero', 'The A-Team', 'Hardcastle & McCormick', 'Wiseguy', '21 Jump Street', 'Silk Stalkings', and 'The Commish'. In the process he had, by his own count, scripted more than 450 episodes, and produced or executive produced over 1,500 episodes.

Cannell appeared as himself in the pilot of the ABC show 'Castle' and again in season 2. Along with James Patterson, Dennis Lehane and Michael Connelly, he was one of Castle's poker buddies. In season 3, an empty seat at the poker table is described as Cannell's, and remains empty for a full year.

After his death, an episode of 'Castle' showed Cannell's logo with the words, "Colleague, Mentor, Friend", while he is typing and, "We'll miss you, pal", superimposed over the sheet of paper, but the stack of paper is absent, and the lone sheet floats down towards the bottom and out of view.
