TV ON TV - THE LINK BETWEEN 'DOCTOR WHO' AND 'MAD MEN'

There was a theoretical connection with 'Doctor Who' in the "half-season finale" of 'Mad Men' this past year.

'DOCTOR WHO' - "DAY OF THE MOON"
'MAD MEN' - "WATERLOO"

On July 21st, 1969, the Doctor fed a recorded video into the live feed transmitting Neil Armstrong's first steps onto the Moon.  It showed a badly wounded member of the Silence revealing to agent Canton Delaware that humans should kill the Silence as soon as they see these aliens who had lived "unnoticed" among Mankind since the invention of the wheel.  This became a hypnotic command to the humans watching it and since the moon landing video feed was being seen by nearly every person on Earth Prime-Time at the time, the Silence were as good as dead.

So any time TV characters do watch the Moon landing in a TV show, whether it was live back in 1969 or a later replay of the recording, then we know they had to be seeing the "command" by the Silence.  And we don't have to worry about why they wouldn't mention it within their own shows because the Silence had the power to be forgotten as soon as you stopped looking at them.

This is what happened in the 'Mad Men' episode.  We got to see four different "gatherings" of the show's characters as they watched Armstrong set foot on the lunar surface:

  • Don Draper, Peggy Olsen, Pete Campbell, and Harry Crane in a Cleveland motel room
  • Henry and Betty Francis with her three children by Don Draper plus a visiting family
  • Roger Sterling with his daughter and son-in-law and his grandson
  • Bert Cooper with his maid
Sadly, Bert Cooper passed away while watching the live coverage.  Perhaps his heart couldn't take the shock of seeing the alien face of the Silence on his TV screen.

This missing link theory would also apply to any other TV shows in which the characters watched the moon landing......
