MAUDIE'S BERTHA DAY

It's the Toobworld Central position that Maxwell Smart's Aunt Bertha on 'Get Smart' was also Bertie in an episode of 'The Doris Day Show'. In 1965, Maxwell Smart's Uncle Abner and Aunt Bertha came to Washington, DC, to visit their nephew. They had no idea that he was a spy for CONTROL.

Three years later, apparently Uncle Abner had passed away and Aunt Bertha was living in the San Francisco area. To make ends meet she was living with an old woman named Gertrude.

Gertrude may have been an old-time con artist and Bertha probably fell under her influence. She even started calling herself Bertie; they probably became known in grifter circles as Gertie and Bertie. The two old ladies were able to trick the Martin boys into selling a prized antique that belonged to Uncle Buck Webb, for far less than its true value (although it was more valuable to Buck because it came out west with his mother at the turn of the century.). Luckily, the boys' mother Doris Martin was able to pull a fast one on them in order to get it back.
