A "BLIND" ITEM

There was a moment in the premiere of 'Blind Justice' that must have left plenty of viewers questioning their own sight.

During a tense stand-off between Detective Jim Dunbar and his wife in their kitchen, Rena Sofer was wearing a shirt whose logo on the front had been fuzzed out. She looked like somebody had taken some kind of cosmic White-Out and tried to smudge her away.

It turns out that the Powers That Be at ABC weren't too pleased with the slogan on her shirt. Apparently, it's a popular shirt up in Canada, which uses a take-off on a company's advertising slogan to put one over on the more prudish in our society. But it looks like that most prudent of groups, Standards & Practices, did not let it slip their notice.

The slogan was "It's Sofa King Cool!" Now, it could very well be that in Toobworld there is a company - or a company "mascot" - named "Sofa King". After all, on 'Friends', Janice was married to the "Mattress King". And 'Batman' and Robin met the "Carpet King" while on one of their bat-climbs up the side of a building.

The trouble is, when said quickly, the slogan "It's Sofa King Cool!" becomes a big no-no, even by Bochcovian standards. The ABC Blue Pencils must have figured this to be another wardrobe malfunction just waiting to happen.

And in this day and age when the networks have to worry about heavy fines from the mis-managed FCC, they must have decided, "Why take chances?"

It all just shows to go ya - the TV Universe may be a separate entity, but it is still dependent upon the Real World for its existence. And the Real World is constantly meddling in its affairs - creating characters, re-writing scenarios.... cosmic meddling on a scale that could make a Toobworld Caretaker throw up his hands in defeat while trying to reconcile the inconsistencies.

But have no fear, I would never throw up my hands in defeat like that.

That would only send the remote control flying and "They" will have to do better than that to pry it loose from my grip!

A MISSING LINK CROSSOVER

'BLIND JUSTICE' & 'CSI: NY'
[with a little 'Law & Order' for good measure!]

It never fails, the action in a TV show builds to a climax and suddenly - bam! Time for a commercial break.

Sometimes the story picks up immediately where it left off; other times there has been a passage of time.

Life in the TV Universe doesn't stop during the ads for dog food or new and improved laundry detergents. We just don't get to see the original story's continuation while we contemplate how to go for the gusto.

So who's to say that while our attentions are diverted elsewhere, might not a TV crossover be taking place in the show we were watching?

A good case in point happened this past Tuesday during the premiere of 'Blind Justice'. Blind police detective Jim Dunbar and his partner Detective Bettancourt were checking out a stolen vehicle report for a car which was quickly recovered. As they looked over the abandoned car, Dunbar's sense of smell, heightened by the loss of his sight, was able to detect the smell of gunpowder. And because of that, a request was made for a crime scene unit to show up and run tests.

At that point, the show switched over to a string of blipverts.

When we got back to the show, it was already in progress. Bettancourt and Dunbar were back at the 8th precinct and awaiting results from the crime scene unit.

So we never got to see who made up that team. So why can't we just assume it to be Detectives Mac Taylor and Stella Bonasera, who are usually to be found on another network in 'CSI: NY'?

Exactly - there's nothing to prevent us from doing so. And therefore we have an unofficial crossover between both series.

And for all we know, it'll be Tracy Kibre of 'Law & Order: Trial By Jury' who'll be prosecuting the guy they eventually caught!!!!

BERGEN COUNTY

I don't consider the study of the TV Universe to be an exact science. And there are those who don't consider it a science at all, unless you consider analytical reports on my mental stability to be science. Hmppph......

For me, televisiology is more of a philosophical pursuit, and thus I am able to fudge the truth and/or campaign for a theory that has no firm basis in fact.

It's sort of like searching for weapons of mass destruction.

That's why I'm able to claim a lot more links between TV shows than those who are constricted by established crossovers only. And a big source of these spurious claims are due to tele-genetics and the study of the genealogies shared by TV characters.

For example? TV characters who look exactly alike.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They're played by the same actor. Don't be such a wet blanket!

Identical twins aren't always siblings. Toobworld has seen identical cousin, clones, parallel universe counterparts, look-alike androids and aliens, shape-shifters, and time travelers who meet themselves at different points in the timeline.

But this time out I'm keeping it simple - twin sisters.

Shirley Schmidt & Amanda Anderlee
'Boston Legal' & 'Law & Order: Trial By Jury'

We met Judge Anderlee first, in an episode of 'Law & Order' earlier this season, and then she appeared just last week on the first two episodes of 'Law & Order: Trial By Jury'.

In between those appearance, her twin sister Shirley Schmidt moved back to Boston after being in charge of the New York offices for Crane, Poole, and Schmidt. She had been summoned back to the home office at the request of the junior partners who were worried about the antics of senior partner Denny Crane.

Shirley Schmidt probably couldn't wait to get back to Beantown after being in such close proximity to her twin sister. Not that there was any love lost between them, but it might have been awkward whenever Shirley had to appear in Amanda's courtroom and then attempt to get her sister disqualified from presiding over her case.

And there was also the matter of the difference between their pesonalities. Shirley and Amanda were a lot like identical cousins Patty and Cathy Lane in that one was free-spirited (Shirley) and the other was of a more sober temperament (Amanda). Amanda looks like she might have disapproved of Shirley's free-wheeling attitude, and Shirley probably couldn't wait to escape that.

And maybe, despite her protests to the contrary, maybe she couldn't wait to get back to Boston for a heaping helping of Denny Crane.

PLEASE don't insult me by pointing out that the characters have different last names. Either one of them or even both of them were probably using their married names. And I'm wondering if they were the type of women who would marry to create alliterations for themselves on their monogrammed bath towels.....

The only pattern I was seeing in this was the recurrence of the numbers being "the second" or "one of two", but that broke up with 42.

Reduction leads to one theory:
As a reminder, the numbers are: 4 8 15 16 23 42

If you add them all together you get 108. If you then reduce the numbers by digit to 1+0+8, you get 9. If you reduce the numbers by digit to 4+8+1+5+1+6+2+3+4+2, you get 72, which reduced again is 9.

Crazy Rousseau is first introduced in episode 9; the numbers are revealed in episode 18, which reduces to 9. In episode 9, we find out that on the back of Sayid's picture of Nadia is the saying "You'll find me in the next life, if not in this one". He gets this picture back in episode 18. Both episodes 9 and 18 talk about the "black rock", which has nine letters. "John Locke" also has nine letters. We first meet Ethan in episode nine.

What does this mean? I'm not sure. I hoping someone grabs onto to this and thinks of something new.

Alternately, the numbers in that order may have significance. As has been pointed out previously, the castaways were on flight 8-15 and Rousseau has been on the island for 16 years. What about "4 x x x 23 42" (x's denote used numbers).

Since I have no practical answers (see above), how about turning to genetics? Rousseau has referred to Alex as her child, so let's start there. "23" could represent Danielle's genetic contribution to Alex (normal). When you add 4 and 42 together you get 46, which the number of chromosomes a normal person has. The "4" could represent genetic material that is neither Rousseau's or Robert's (her husband), but somehow else. Meaning, Alex (whatever the heel he/she/it is) has only 42 normal chromosomes.

Wow, your theories are very interesting. Unfortunately, the only thing I can do is give you some numerology, lol.

The producers have said (I think? I don't know, they've said a lot) to think of the island as a character as much as the "real" character. So perhaps, maybe, if I follow your reduction theory...the island's number is NINE:

The number Nine represents the Beginning and the End of all human experience.

It is the Force of the outgoing number One,
the Light and the Peace of the number Two,
the Imagination of the number Three,
the Form and Order of the number Four,
the Life and Progress of the number Five,the Responsibility of the number Six,
the Intelligence and Perfection of the number Seven,
the Judgment of the number Eight,
the Compassion and Benevolence of the number Nine.
The number Nine represents mankind's last earthly lesson:
"Forgiveness."

You might be able to see why a Caretaker of Toobworld such as myself feels at home among these people.......

But for Toobworld purposes, it's the special Mega Jackpot number of 42 that interests us the most.
"42", according to the super computer Deep Thought in 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy', is the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything.

That may be the answer, but the trick is to know what the Ultimate Question is.

And if the 18 episodes of 'Lost' shown so far are any indication, this mysterious island is a breeding ground for questions.

Could this be a kind of a connection between 'Lost' and 'The Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy'? In a specific sense, no. But in a general sense, they are connected. In fact, every show is connected to 'HHG2TG' (the TV version).

In 1980, the world was destroyed by a Vogon constructor fleet to make way for a hyperspace bypass. But because Arthur Dent and Ford Prefect went back in Time and messed around with the Earth's history, a new timeline was created and those events of 1980 never took place. That's why Toobworld still exists today.

I won't speculate myself as to what all the mysteries on the show mean. Based on what I've read, I'm assured that the creators know the answer to everything they've set up already, unlike the people who begat 'The X-Files' and 'Twin Peaks'.

I just wanted to point out that the number 42, the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything was in the special Mega-Jackpot box. And that sequence of numbers was later shown to be on the hatch being uncovered by Locke and Boone.

The hatch could be considered as sort of a lid to a box, right?

So the answer to the Universe is in the box......

MISSING LINK CROSSOVER

"LOST" & "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM"
In the last, fresh episode of 'Lost' until mid-April, we finally got Hurley's flashback to learn something of his past.

Hugo Reyes may have been a patient or an orderly in a sanitarium where he learned of a particular sequence of numbers - 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. He played these numbers in the Mega Jackpot lottery and won the grand prize, ultimately bringing him a net worth of 156 million dollars.

But it also brought him a string of bad luck htat may have culminated with the plane's crash on the island.

His grandfather died; his mother broke her ankle; his aunt was struck by lightning; his brother's wife left him for another woman; his new house burned; as did the shoe company he owned. And then he was arrested by the L.A.P.D. because they mistook him for a drug dealer.

In a way, this worked out to his benefit - the settlement of his lawsuit against the police force netted him even more money, nearly doubling his initial windfall.

The police cuffed and booked Hurley because of a case of mistaken identity. And it's easy to figure out whom they mistook him for. By an "amazing coincidence", Hurley is the identical twin to a drug dealer whom Larry David encountered while caught up in the rules over a car pool lane.

For you people who insist on remaining tethered to the Real World, the actor Jorge Garcia plays both Hugo "Hurley" Reyes on 'Lost' and the drug dealer on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'.

This could be looked upon as an in-joke by anybody else. But for Toobworld, it's an unofficial crossover. Hurley and his evil twin both exist in the same universe and the cops couldn't tell them apart.

Now if only the squad car answered to the radio call letters of "1 Adam 12".....!
